Cloth Diapering

Bummis swim diapers?

Hi, I lurk here occasionally.  I have been CDing 4 mo now and It's going great.  I'm shopping for a swim diaper and wondering what people think about the bummis swim diapers.  Has anyone used them as a cover as well.  The product info says you can use it as a cover but you can't use it as a cover and a swim diaper.

"You can use it as a cloth diaper cover, but never use the same cover as both a swim diaper and diaper cover"

I'm a little confused about this.  Do they mean that once it is used as a swim diaper it can never be used as a cover or are they just saying that you can't throw your kid cover with prefold/insert and all into the pool?

Also, I'm just wondering why I can't just use one of my fleece lined covers as a swim diaper.  Has anyone done that?

 Thanks

Re: Bummis swim diapers?

  • I think the issue with using a pocket diaper as a swim diaper is chlorine (assuming it's used in chlorinated pools).  Chlorine isn't great for the laminate, so if you then use that diaper as a regular diaper, I think you may be more likely to have leak problems.  What we do is pick an older pocket that we don't care about to use as a swim diaper, and don't use any inserts.  Swim diapers don't have any absorbency, since absorbent material would just soak up pool water; they're just intended to catch poop.

Overall, I've heard good things about Bummis but since we have old pocket diapers, I'd rather use those and not spend the money.

  • We really like the Bummis swim diapers. What they mean is that they could be used as a cover (I guess if you like the pattern/fit better than their regular covers?) but if you choose to use it as a swim diaper you shouldn't use it as a cover anymore. Chlorine effects the PUL and it will leak after being in a pool (apparently, I haven't tested this theory). You can technically use an old pocket too as the PP mentioned. It's not recommended to use a plain cover because the slippery PUL is not a great surface for poop to slide around on while swimming. The Bummis swim diaper is lined with mesh.

Side note: because chlorine is the issue you can feel free to use a pocket that you like and plan to use again in places like a kiddy pool in your backyard, lake, etc.

  • i bought this swim diaper last year before i even flirted with the idea of cloth diapering, my daughter still fits in the one i got her last year so for 12.75 im getting 2 years out of it. also because it goes on like a diaper it was a selling point for us, and because of the Velcro it makes a more customized fit.

im not sure about the whole diaper thing you where asking about. because the swim diaper has mesh lining in it also its not made to absorb or prevent leaking.
