How long from steps to walking?

DD took her first steps about a month ago- and she still only takes 1-3 steps by herself a month later.  She loves walking holding onto my hand and can stand unassisted like a pro, but I'd love for her to walk herself (I think she would be much happier if she could carry her various object from one place to another without having to crawl with them).  How long did it take your LO to go from taking an occasional step to walking?  Anything I can do to encourage her?

  • A is still in the process of becoming a full out walker. She started taking one or two steps about a months ago too and has been standing on her own for nearly two months. About 2 weeks ago she started taking a series of steps together and has been improving daily. Really its just been the past few days that she chooses to walk over crawling. And she's definitely still very slow and unsteady. It doesn't seem like it happened as quickly for her as a lot of mamas on here describe. So maybe some little ones like to take their time with the walking. The only thing that seems to encourage her are our cats! She loves to chase them.

  • Maybe 1 month until I considered him actually walking.  But even then he could only take ~ 10 steps before falling.  A few weeks after that ~11 months he started to stand up without holding onto furniture.  And now in the last month (he's ONE today) he stopped doing the frankenstein walk.  He still falls from time to time, especially on a slope or incline but he's much more natural.

Almost this exactly!  Except we don't have cats...she will go for Cheerios! :)   I agree, I think some are just more cautious. I'm anxious for her to choose walking over crawling though because, I too, think she'd be happier with it.  Soon for them all I'm sure. :

  • It was about a month from when LO took his first solo step to walking, which he did for the first time last weekend. He's getting better and better everyday and crawling less and less and it's only been a few days.

DS started taking many steps a week after his first three steps, but he didn't stop falling after like a month. He hates when anyone touches his hand though, so he just HAD to do it on his own lol. She probably just likes to hold mommy's hand :) I wish DS did!
  • We're not 100% there (she still favors crawling for sure) but it's taken her about 2 weeks to get from 2-3 steps to walking across rooms and being really good at holding her balance and recovering. But I have a very stubborn child, once she moved to the bigger baby side at daycare, her teachers said she saw all the other kids walking and all she wanted to do was practice it over and over until she got it right. If the big boys can do it - little Lexi can do it!

Ha this is Ev too. He saw another little girl walking at the pool on a Saturday, and the next day he started walking on his own, getting halfway across the living room or so. To answer your question though OP, he took his first steps probably well over a month ago, and then made no progress until around a week ago (right after seeing the girl at the pool). Then he suddenly got it and when he tries can now get across a room without falling. He still prefers to crawl most of the time, but I would consider him walking, just choosing not to :).

  • DD took her first real steps on June 1, and she now walks almost exclusively. I'd say it took her about a week to feel confident enough to keep trying to walk, and also by that point she figured out how to push herself to standing from the ground without going to a table, wall, etc. first. I think her figuring out how to do that was the key!
