1st Trimester

Shortness of breath and hard to get a deep breath come in!

I just want to whine together. I've asked the doctor about it at both appointments and been reassured it's normal. I also don't have any other symptoms like rapid heartbeat or chest pain but I find this so annoying! It's affecting my motivation because I get out of breath so easily!

Have you found anything that helps with this? For every 10 deep breaths I take I only get one good one. Extra annoying!

Thanks for sharing!

  • I had anxiety attacks when I was a little younger so I learned how to use the pursed lip breathing method.

It helps you get back on track - it's important to breathe out longer than you breathe in to make sure you're expelling all the CO2 from your lungs. Also laying on your left side is supposed to help open the airways.

  • I don't have any great ideas but I wanted to let you know I have a little of this too.  If I do a fast movement like hop into bed or walk up a flight of stairs I have to take a big mouth breath to get oxygen before breathing normally.  It is so weird!

  • Yeah, I get this too!  It's strange because I feel like anyone even touching me (usually that means DH) in inhibiting my getting a deep breath.  I just have to be still, and stretch my torso as long as I can like I'm stretching out my lungs.  The feeling usually passes after a few minutes.

  • I've had this with every pregnancy.  I think that it is just your body needing to provide oxygen to you AND your growing baby.  It seems to level out during the second tri, but comes back again when your little one takes up your ENTIRE torso!. :-)  Google facts about how much more oxygen a pregnant woman draws...as well as how much more blood our hearts are pumping by the end of the pregnancy.  Pretty cool stuff.
  • I've had this with all three of my pregnancies. It's bad when I'm going upstairs, and worse if I'm carrying LO with me.
