Working Moms

Anyone have any legit work from home options?

Good morning!  Does anyone know of any options for the working mom who doesn't want to put baby in daycare when she has to return to work?  It's so hard to look for a work from home job because there are so many scams!  Does anyone know of any legit work from home positions?

  • Start a business or maybe a daycare.

  • I wish some enterprising mom in my area would start a Care-on-Call service you could call when your LO is too sick to take to daycare but you really need to go into work.

I don't mean taking sick kids into your own home but, instead, being a coordinator of a pool of pre-screened babysitters who'd be willing to go to people's homes on short notice to help with sick children.  In my area, I think something like this would do fantastically well.

    Just an idea.

  • There are none because no legit company is going to pay you to stay home and play with your baby.

Legit jobs require the full attention of the employee.

    THIS!

Keep in mind that right now you may be able to comprehend the thought of getting some work done at your home but as your child gets older this is not realistic at all. You won't be able to work and chase your child around once they become mobile. Or let's say you do try working, what would you do with your LO? Put them in front of a tv? Ignore them?

I'm really not trying to be rude so sorry if it comes across that way. It just doesn't work out they you think it would. I'm a teacher so I am not working at the moment since it's summer. I'm doing good to just get some laundry done (washroom outside) and other household stuff while entertaining my child all day. I feel like I'm constantly cleaning up after her, feeding her and of course having fun doing stuff with her. I can't imagine trying to fit in some type of job on top of it all!

  • I know two moms who WFH for an airline & a hotel chain taking reservations over the phone. They both only do it part time for extra cash while they're kids are napping or after they're in bed. They don't make much hourly but it works for their needs.

Another mom I know does a lot of craft type work from home. She makes stuff that she sells at craft fairs & online. She puts a LOT of hours in after her kids are in bed & I don't think she really clears much after the supplies she buys.

From what I've gathered in conversations with all of them it sounds like any side job from home without having your kids in daycare is really hard. You have to sacrifice the time somewhere so if it's not with your kids it will be sleep, time with your husband, etc. You have to put a lot of effort into it to actually make any money.

  • Ditto the others, if you're not plannign to get anyone to actually help watch the LO at home with you then any option is going to be VERY p/t and minimal in scope/responsibility so I guess it depends on what you want to do.

If you're crafty or have a skill like that then you could do things like etsy or offer your services in some small way... (also the parties like others have said but you pretty much have to work evenings & weekends to make any $ in those or perhaps a small telemarketing job but again, it would have to be when your LO is not awake & demanding attention.)

  • I will second the idea of care-on-call.. I know a woman with an MBA who wanted to stay home with her kids while they were young and opened a very small in-home daycare. She was not licensed, but she was fantastic. It was a great opportunity to have her kids socialize with other kids. When her kids reached school-age she went back to work. When I was looking for daycares I saw a number of situations like this where a new mom wanted to take in even just one other family for extra money.
  • I wish people wouldn't be dream stealers. There are legit work from opportunities.
