Dr offered to induce

I'm almost 38 weeks and today at my appt my Dr. offered to induce me.  I checked out completely healthy and so did my baby so there is absolutely no medical reason to be induced.

Is this normal practice?  I told her I'd just wait it out and my baby will come when she's ready.  If I get to 40 weeks with no progress than we can re-evaluate and talk about inducing.  I just thought it was strange that she offered it when there's really no reason for it!

So happy for my BFPB Steff13914 and her new twins! Welcome to the world sweet babies:) Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker

Re: Dr offered to induce

  • That is odd. My doctor won't even consider inducing until after 40 weeks. He won't even begin discussing it with me.

Same... my doctor actually "warned" me early on that if I went 41 weeks we might have to induce... at my last appointment she warned me again that we might have to induce next Friday, but if I wanted to wait until 42 weeks she'd be willing to talk about our options.

  • They same thing happened to me yesterday!  She told my I was favorable and could be induced at 39 weeks (which would be next Friday).  I turned it down because like you, there is no medical reason for it.  I found it odd that she asked me, but it seems that more and more OB's are making it an option, and I am sure many of them are used to be pressured by women to do inductions these days.  I normally see a midwife, but she was doing a C-section yesterday so I had to see someone else.  I'm wondering whether my midwife would have been so quick to offer me one or not.

  • I agree that its odd. I asked today at my 39 week appointment how "long they would let me go". We won't start look to schedule an induction until I am at my 41 week appointment.

  • she offered to induce at 38 weeks with no medical reason?? I would be a concerned about this. My midwife doesn't discuss the options until a couple of days before 41 weeks.

  • Mine wouldn't even consider it until my 41 week appt but good for you for declining. I don't know that I would be strong enough!!

That is weird.  I'm 39 weeks today and at my appt. yesterday my Dr. said that because my cervix was not ready she didn't want to risk induction b/c it could end up in a really long labor/c-section that I wouldn't normally need.  I'd wait it out and let nature take it's course since it isn't medically necessary.
  • I'm sorry but that makes me angry.  Our birth culture is so messed up in this country.  I can't believe an educated doctor would do that.  There are RISKS to induction.  Induction often FAILS because your body isn't ready - then you get a c-section.  Why not wait and let your body do what it's meant to do?

I also had an appt today and was checked and my cervix is still completely closed.  My doctor did not push induction, but she did bring it up and mention that she does not want me to go far past 41 weeks.  We will reassess next week (when I will be 40 weeks) and go from there.

I appreciate that my doctor discusses things that may need to be decided a few appts prior so I can start thinking about them, discuss with my DH, and do research.  The "I" word is not always evil and many people have good ones.  I do not want to be induced, but I am staying open to what my doctor feels is best.  Nothing wrong with that.

  • At 36 weeks, my doctor offered to schedule induction for my 39th week (June 7th).  They offered again at my 37 week appointment and I declined again.  I'm still here, so I obviously would not have been ready yet!!  I know too many people who went through painful induction labor just to end in a c-section because it didn't work.
