DH and his attorneys have reached a settlement with the insurance company for the young woman who plowed into him while reading a text in Dec '09.  

It is a substantial amount but it was never about money.  The medical bills were several hundred thousand dollars for an initial 6-week hospital stay, multiple surgeries, CAT scans, MRIs and months and months of intense outpatient rehab for physical, occupational, speech and psycho-therapy.   There were additional expenses for hiring an aide to help with ADLs, making his father and SM's house handicapped accessible when needed the first few months and numerous other out of pocket expenses which his father funded.

Maybe we can now put this awful period of our lives behind us.  The last weeks of negotiation have triggered PTSD- type flashbacks in both of us.  Hoping we can now look forward.

I'm sorry to hear this has dragged on for so long.  FX this brings some closure to what sounds like a horrible ordeal.

I am very happy this event has closure in this sense, and is able to help you all as well. I hope you guys are able to use all the help that the settlement brought and continue to heal as well. I was in a near-fatal car accident myself, 10 years ago, and although I had a long road ahead of me as far as recovery and still have some life-long health concerns, I can understand how events like that can linger a lifetime and money is only one very small portion of the side-effects.
