1st Trimester

Anyone measure ahead early on?

I just had a second u/s and measured 8w 5d. Prior to that they didn't give me an estimated due date, but they thought I was a little earlier than 6 weeks at an u/s I had 2 weeks ago, and according to when I think I ovulated, I believed I was about 8 weeks today. Is this typical this early on? I'll take it, as my big concern is measuring behind (ds had severe IUGR, so we're trying to avoid that this time), I just was surprised.

Re: Anyone measure ahead early on?

  • I thought early USs were especially accurate, so I'm really not sure why there is a discrepancy. I would probably use the 2nd US since that's closer to where you think you are. BUT, I would be weary of them wanting to induce at 40w on the off chance you are really two weeks behind. Hmm.. definitely strange!

  • Oh sorry, let me clarify. The u/s I had 2 weeks ago said I was just shy of 6 weeks, which was right according to when I know I ovulated. So today I should have been 8 weeks, but it was 8 weeks 5 days, so almost a week ahead. I thought the early ones were very accurate, so I was surprised.

  • Ahh. Gotchya. I was thinking that you jumped a whole 2+ weeks. 5 days doesn't seem too "off" but like you, I thought early USs were very accurate.... Definitely weird.

  • 5 days doesn't seem too bad - I agree with a PP though just be aware of the discrepancy so hopefully you can avoid being induced early for no reason. GL - I hope you can avoid IUGR I don't know a lot about it just a little from reading HannahO's blog
  • If I remember my doctor correctly he said ultrasounds at around 8 weeks have a 3 to 4 day margin of error. I'm also measuring about 5 days ahead and my neighbors been measuring a week ahead since her first ultrasound so I wouldn't be too worried. If it worries you too much call your ob.

  • My doctor told me that u/s aren't really accurate in dating until about 10 weeks.
