1st Trimester

Nausea at every smell

Ok ladies,

I don't know if its only me or what. I am 11 weeks and since about 9 weeks I have had huge issues with the smell of leftovers, dirty dishes, the trash cans, ect. I start gagging immediately and sometimes ultimately throwing up. I don't understand it. I now have my husband doing most the chores that pertain to any of those things becuase I can't stand it. My doctor says that its normal with hightened senses. But I don't know how long this will last? Does anyone else have this issue? The doctor says that it will eventually go away but when?

Thanks everyone!

  • I have it now too! My DH was eating something the other night, and i was like "ok, you gotta go eat that somewhere else, youremaking me sick" lol. With my first two pregnancies, it went away during the 2nd tri, but came back in the 3rd. goodluck

  • Yep, me too. I can't go into our pantry bc of the smell. It smells like bread and potatoes and cardboard. Weird, I know! But definitely vom worthy. The fridge isn't much better, but I have to suck it up, or my kid wouldn't be able to eat. To this day I can't stand the smell of potstickers bc Dh made some while I was pg with Ds and it was AWFUL. Bleh.

  • Yep, that's me. I gaged last night over the smell of my deodorant. I immediately went and washed it off. It's a new deodorant and it smells terrible. I definitely won't be using it again. I also gag and sometimes throw up when I go upstairs in my house. We have two separate a/c units so I don't turn on the upstairs until I go to bed and it's hot up there. When I walk upstairs the hot, stuffy smell is horrendous.

The worst for me is the trash can. I don't like the smell normally, but it is so beyond horrible now. You couldn't pay me to take it out. Ugh.

  • Normal. My DH was eating some flavored crackers earlier and they smelled horrendous. I can't stand the smell of his cologne, tons of my Scentsy's, gasoline, garbage, dogs after they come inside, etc....the list goes on and on.

  • I work in a hospital.  Dealing with sick, bed bound people who aren't wearing deodorant.  Nuff said.

  • Bath and body works hand soaps, my deoderant, DS breath in the morning. DH bought me lillies for Mother's Day and they were beautiful but gawh, the smell got me. He was so sweet today and bought me more lillies because I've been sick and home with a sick kiddo. I don't have the heart to tell him the smell makes me want to vomit.

  • Oh man, I agree with all of the above. However, I have had hyperemesis since about 7 weeks so the smells almost always make me throw up. I also had to get fragrance free deodorant. Gag, gag, gag. It's the bionic sense of smell. Can't wait until this part is past!

  • I hadn't had any heightened sense of smell until today. Unfortunately I thought the drain at work smelled like poop, this one guy's cologne smelled like baby powder which made me think of baby butt = poop, and I thought it smelled like my dog had pooped in our apartment when I got home. I was the only one who noticed it all night so I guess I'm just crazy.
  • I'm barely 8 weeks and I'm a TOTAL SPAZCASE! I always thought pregnant women were just being annoying and complainly when they would complain about smells, but these smells are OVERPOWERING! Plus, I can smell things others can't even smell! I feel like a superhero! a very nauseated superhero! And sometimes if I think it SHOULD smell, I'll freak out. Last night my husband left salsa out for a long time, (it was from Chipotle, not from a jar that was going back in the fridge,) and I just wanted to yarf every time I saw it. CRAZY RIGHT? I finally just told him he had to toss it. He wasn't eating it anymore anyway.

Yeah. I'm all kinds of high maintenance now!
