1st Trimester

Confused and worried

So at my first doctors appointment I asked alot of questions, one being is she going to check my blood levels..(some of my girlfriends had difficulty in there pregnancies and the doctors tested the blood levels)..well anyways my doctor said oh no we wont do that.

My 2nd appointment my doctor said they are going to take some blood to test for my blood type and they will also check my blood levels.  I was so confused but for some reason I did not ask why all of a sudden are they checking my blood level ?

Now I am very worried about it ..

Is that normal for doctors to check blood levels...if they suspect somethings wrong dont they have to tell you there thoughts?

 thanks all for any input

Re: Confused and worried

  • Relax.  Even minimal bloodwork is standard in low risk pregnancies.  At your second appointment they probably won't be checking you HCG levels.  They will be doing baseline bloodwork for things like thyroid levels, iron levels, etc.  Just standard care.

I wouldn't worry about it...Maybe they were confused at the question you asked or maybe didn't understand what you meant by it. My first appt they took a lot of blood and they tested for everything and they even took my urine. I just got a call a couple of days ago telling me that everything looks good and my urine checked out and what blood type I was. I believe they check your blood later on in the pregnancy as well because with my first I had to go on iron pills but it wasn't until the 3rd tri I had to do this. I can't remember that well but I was going to ask at my next appt and just so they are aware that I had to take them last time. I hope this helps!

Like PP said, they will be doing basic blood work but when they told you checking levels I would not take that to mean HCG. At my first appointment they drew blood to check cell count, electrolytes, thyroid, iron, etc. I am also a FTM and my doctor told me unless I experience bleeding there is no reason to do HCG or early US. Also if your doctor expects there is something wrong they will tel you! Everything you are describing seems very standard :)

  • First, don't be worried even if she is checking HCG levels.

Second, call the Dr. back to see what tests they are drawing the blood for.  They will tell you all of the tests, probably the standard pregnancy test panel including Rubella, blood type, HIV, Hepatitis Panel, CBC, and maybe some others as well.  These are all normal tests that they do for pregnancy.  It may be standard for their office to also draw an HCG level at that time since they are drawing blood anyways.  But like I said, that may just be their policy and is nothing to worry about at all.

  • How far along are you? They did blood work at my first appointment but I didn't have my 1st until I was 8 weeks. Maybe they just didn't bother doing it really early. Blood work is fairly standard - they likely just don't do it at the 1st appointment.
  • A blood draw at around 8 weeks is standard. Most doctors don't do betas, only if you have had miscarriages in the past or trouble conceiving. It is a good thing if they don't need to do betas. Relax.

  • I just had my first appointment on Monday and they took lots of blood for bloodwork. I thought, too, that they would be doing a blood confirmation for my pregnancy and checking the HCG levels, but they didn't. As a PP said, this was done as a baseline test. They are screening my blood for all sorts of things, which will be discussed at my next appointment, though HCG was not among them. There will be more bloodwork done down the line, so this helps them to see if there are any spikes in things such as sugar levels (allowing screening for gestational diabetes for example), thyroid, etc. This is all standard procedure, though if you are still concerned, there is no reason that you couldn't call to ask the doctor. I'm sure they would be able to tell you exactly what they screen for. It is listed on my OB's website, too.
  • Dont worry :) Everyone I know had had blood work, usually to check HCG levels and then again to check like blood glucose tolerance, its not somethign to stress yourself out over.

I wouldn't worry, blood work is routine around 8-10 weeks.  If they did an U/S, checking HCG would just be redundant, (IMO). You should be just fine.  With my first, the midwives told me not to bother coming in until after 8 or 9 weeks, (I was sure about the dates because I had tracked ovulation).  They took blood then, for typing etc.

  • I just had my HCG checked and I think I am much earlier than was originally estimated. My numbers were really low so they want to check agian next week. But I was told that blood work wil be pretty standard at almost every visit. Anyone else have really low numbers on the first test? Mine ws 40, which means I am only about 3-4 wks vs 6-7 wks.
