Anyone else going to try baltic amber for teething?

It can't hurt DD so we are going to give it a shot. Think I am going to order from this website www.hazelaid.com. They discount for large co-op orders. I thought for a second about trying to organize one for us. But with the move...I just can't be relied on right now to take on one more thing.

My family is a Foreign Service family. Families like mine are posted in every corner of the globe. We live our lives away from family, friends and the conviences and comforts of home. We often live and work in dangerous places among those that misunderstand our intentions and purposes. Sometimes members of our ranks sacrifice our lives to further diplomacy.  Please remember that we serve too. And I'm always open to questions.

Re: Anyone else going to try baltic amber for teething?

  • I've thought about it.  My DD has eczema so I've been interested in the hazelwood necklaces as a natural remedy.  Since they have the combo necklaces, I might get one of those.  Anything to make her get through the teething and eczema easier...

  • I got on from amberartisans.com for Charlie. It's hard to say if it works because he wears it everyday! He doesn't wear it to bed, but I know moms who let them wear it to bed.  I think it was worth it. I would rather try natural stuff before teething meds which dont get very good safety reviews.
  • We just got one. The jury's still out on whether it works or not for my LO, but it is definitely not hurting.

On a side note, the moms in the toddler group that meets before my newborn group SWEAR by them. Even their hubbies, who thought the necklaces were a ridiculous scheme now tout that all babies should have one. So, who knows?

  • My DS wears an amber teething necklace day and night.  Some moms wrap it around the ankle at night time.

I have no idea if it's working, but it's worth a shot.  Our necklace is also "hazelaid" brand, but I got it at a discount price from mamabargains.com.  These necklaces show up once in a while on the deal-a-day sites, like babysteals.com and babyhalfoff.com.

  • DD has worn Hazelwood since 4 weeksm, it really does seem to help with her skin.  We have an amber necklace in anticipation of her needing it.

As far as wearing to bed, I have heard that some moms put it on as a anklet while they sleep, to alleviate the possible chocking hazard.  DD has still been wearing hers on her neck for sleeping, but she is swaddled, so she doesn't really move.

Amber necklackes are, at best, totally snake oil, designed to given parents a sense of control over the discomfort that their children experience while teething. At worst, they present an extreme choking hazard (if even one bead falls off the chain if the necklace breaks, it is enough to choke your baby), strangulation hazard if something else gets caught up in the necklace (even during the day, it only takes a second of inattentiveness for something bad to happen!), contamination hazard from random ingredients to have been used in the manufacturing of your supposedly "genuine" amber necklace product, etc.

These necklaces are being pulled off the market all the time for safety and contamination issues--you can do a quick google search to see some of these recalls. To each her own, but read about them and think critically about what this product actually claims to do. It claims that fossilized tree sap will somehow magically melt and release chemicals that have been preserved for millions of years due to the warmth of your child's skin....really? The fossilization process can be reversed by the 98.6 degree skin of a human, when millions of years of sunlight/earth heat has not "activated" these chemicals? Plus, just because this "succinic acid" is natural, it is not necessarily good. Natural does not always equal good. Cyanide, poison ivy, and arsenic are all 100% natural, but that doesn't mean you would allow any of these natural products to touch your baby. This "succinic acid" has not been scientifically proven to provide ANY benefit to teething babies. Just because people used to use tree sap to try to promote healing in the olden days means nothing--people in today's times use powdered snakes, bat wings, etc. for the same purpose, but that doesn't make those products inherently good just because someone, somewhere uses them.

Besides, see above for the ridiculous claim that a fossilized product will "activate" on your child's skin, and somehow be absorbed into your child's neck skin and magically know that your child's gums are irritated and travel there to heal the gum tissue.

I HATE products that take advantage of worried moms trying to do the best for their kiddos. I ESPECIALLY hate products that promote themselves as healthy, when they really present so many risks to vulnerable babies.

Get some frozen teething rings, the mesh teether with frozen milk/formula/fruit/etc, and just ride it out. At least you will know that you are not endangering your child for a "cure" that has never, ever been able to scientifically show that it lessens a child's teething pain/swelling.
