I am looking for a carrier/sling and I'm overwhelmed at the choices, you guys seem to be the pros so here is my situation. I have a 3 year old daughter and my son is due in 2 weeks. I was born with one hand so the wraps that require a lot of tying might be tough for me to use... (I'm also relatively spastic and would be terrified I would tie it wrong and he would flop out)
Ideally I would love something that I can nurse in because keeping my "hands" free as much as possible is going to be a pretty huge deal. Any suggestions? With DD someone gave me this sling that I wore almost like a purse but it really only worked when she was tiny... I'd like something I can use for a while if possible. I also have a front carrier thing that I used with DD but I doubt I would be able to nurse in it... TIA
Re: I need help
If you liked using a ring sling before but it just wasn't supportive enough once your LO got bigger, I would suggest going with a more supportive ring sling. I've had/have a few double linen & silk Sakura Bloom slings that I've used with my 30 lb toddler with no issues. The silk is definitely more supportive for bigger toddlers, but the double linen works just fine.
If you're on TBW, you can always snag a used one & resell if you don't like it.
I'd go Ring Sling too. I can put mine on and adjust it with one hand (while supporting baby with the other arm), so I'm sure you could figure out a way.
In terms of finding a store. Search for cloth diaper stores, natural parenting stores, birth center associated stores etc. You'll want to find a smaller boutique type store who will help you test things out etc. Also, since you're quite pregnant now you might want to wait until baby comes to find something. I tried on some carriers at a breastfeeding class and I really couldn't actually try most of them because of the belly.
Metro Minis is in NYC & they sell several brands of ring slings (including the one I rec'd) & other types of carriers.
