Someone explain fondant to me
I had a "cake" today (this is questionable as it didn't taste much like cake), that was covered in fondant. I was told said fondant was edible but upon eating it I beg to differ. I know that the fondant craze has been pretty solid for awhile now, but I can't figure it out.
I get that it makes the cake look "prettier" but if it tastes like shiit and I can't REALLY eat it, then why is it getting in the way of me and my icing?
Someone explain this to me. Do you like fondant? Do you use it when baking? Do you eat that crusty stuff?

I think its pretty to look at, but it tastes horrible.
Regular Fondant = Crap
Marshmallow = Amazingly good
And I hate all kind of cake.
It's like clay for cake decorating. And tastes about like that.
I never eat it. For my wedding cake, the baker used a combo recipe that was part fondant, part butter cream. It had a little more structure to it to allow her to make the cake pretty, but it was yummy and edible. It wasn't as pretty as other cakes I've seen, but I think it's because she wasn't really that good at the decorating thing.
I did not know there was more than one kind of fondant. Does the marshmallow kind look the same?
Yes, sorta. It's a little softer but edible.
I'm not a cake eater and I was sneaking the fondant dots from my DDs birthday cake.

True Story, my birthday is around Mardi Gras, I always had a King Cake for my birthday cake.

That said, homemade marshmallow fondant is the BOMB DIGGETY. I loves me some of that stuff. When you put it over devil's food cake and buttercream, it tastes like Hostess Cupcakes.

I hate frosting. It gets in the way of cake. Shiit did I just waste a UO?
I think someone needs to ask Little Debbie what she is putting over her cakes. It looks just as good as fondant to me and it tastes way better.
Although I'm certain it is a heart attack in a plastic wrapper. No way are these things good for you.
THOSE are the only kind of cakes I'll eat.

I eat the crust around the pie, so we should share.
Fondant is not food, and it tastes like play do. I'll take a butter-creme cake any day. Actually I would prefer a mint-chocolate ice cream cake.
