Two empty sacs at 8 weeks 5 days?

Hi Ladies,

My sister is on an emotional roller coaster of thretened miscarriage.  At 6.5 weeks, she was told baby measuring slightly behind, but heartbeat seen, low progesterone and given supplements.  Five days later (at 7 weeks 4 days), second ultrasound with different dr said baby same size as week before (now 2 weeks behind) no heartbeat.  Told to keep taking progesterone supplements, it might be too early for heart beat and to come back in one week.  Due to spotting, she went in yesterday to be told this time that she has two sacs which have tripled in size from last ultrasound, but dr. could see nothing in the sacs (no baby, no heart beat).  She was 8 weeks 5 days yesterday.  The nurse told her that "you never know with twins" referring to not seeing anything on the ultrasound.  Her hcg levels have continued to rise.

Has anyone had any experience with empty sacs this late with ultrasound that is not a blighted ovum or missed miscarriage?

I posted a similar question yesterday on a different board.  If you responded yesterday, thank you! We have used your input to research and form more questions for her doctor. She is also considering a second opinion.

I'm sorry to hear this and unfortunately have no personal experience to offer.  I just wanted to say that sounds bizarre but plausible.  Seems like her only options are to wait and see and/or get a second opinion, neither of which are particularly comforting.

Are the dates for sure?  Is it possible she isn't as far along as she thinks she is or was the original sac measuring for the first date?

I would guess she is earlier than the dates above and still should hold out hope.

Unfortunately, I think her dates are correct.  She was temping and using OPKs and got a positive hpt on 8dpo and every test thereafter.

My concern with this would be the fact that you saw HBs in one visit and now can't see them weeks later. I would go for another look, but I would prepare myself for a bad outcome. Just being honest.

unfortunately twins don't have anything to do with why there is no heartbeats at 8 weeks. I wish I  had better words of support to offer. The heartbeat develops at 6 weeks and can be seen as early at 6 weeks, but definitely by 8 weeks.

just tell her to listen to her docs and trust them...and to stay positive, we will all be sending T&P's her way. and update us on the outcome. try asking this on the multiples board, maybe some of those mamas have similar stories to give her some hope
