crock pot is making my counter top hot!

Im cooking ribs in our crock pot and I havent used the crock pot in this apartment yet. So, they have been in there for maybe an hour and the counter underneed it is hot! Im kind of worried to leave the house.

Does your crock do this? Should i put the crockpot on a cookie sheet? I have a big glass cutting board i can put it on.. but do you this the heat would just make it crack?

Thanks ladies!

Re: crock pot is making my counter top hot!

  • What type of crockpot? How old is it? Mine never get hot like that. I'd be afraid that it is malfunctioning and might need a new one.

  • I always leave my crock pot on top of the stove when I use it. I can't say that I've ever felt the stove top underneath the crock pot, but I do know that after a while the outside of the crock pot will be somewhat hot to the touch.

its like probably 4 years old? It was pretty cheap tho, i got it at walmart..
  • That would make me nervous too.  We have a Hamilton Beach, and it gets warm to the touch on the outside, but I've never noticed the counter getting hot, might be time to get a new one, esp since you've had the current one awhile.

  • We have the largest Crock Pot brand one (it's stainless and red). It does this too. Its the only one I've ever used so I thought it was just the way they are. If we touch anything but the handle it burns. My countertop gets too hot to touch but never gets ruined---so far. Now I'm worried too.

  • I have a stainless stell Hamilton Beach and it is less than a year old. The counter does get a little hot when I use it, but it isn't burning hot. I am having a hard time figuring out how the counter wouldn't get hot when you use it. The crock has to be hot enough to cook food, and it sits and inch or so over the counter for long periods of time. The outside of the crock pot gets somewhat hot too, so it seems natural for the heat to radiate down to the counter. Maybe I'm wrong, it's just never crossed my mind that it would be unusual for the counter to get a little hot as well.

I have a Crockpot brand slow cooker and my counter get pretty hot. I have a couple of tiles with felt feet on them that I use as trivets so I will out my crockpot on top of those to put a little more space between my crockpot and counter. Eta: I fixed an auto correct crackpot to crockpot. Ha
