1st Trimester

Would you call your OB back up?

I had my 10 week appointment yesterday, and my OB prescribed me a round of antibiotics for this sinus infection I can't seem to shake. I've been taking Sudafed and it does NOTHING. Anyway, I didn't really click that she only prescribed antibiotcs and no decongestant or cough suppressant. First, I have my doubts if the antibiotics will actually clear this crap up. Second, even if it does, I'm miserable until they do. I don't want to mess with anymore lousy over-the-counter meds. I want some mega meds to dry me up and end this cough. If you were in this position, would you call your OB and ask for some better drugs, or suck it up and go rummage around CVS for pregnancy approved cough drops and nasal sprays?

  • I took OTC meds when I had a sinus infection last week. I don't think I could have functioned without it. The pharmacist was really helpful in helping me pick. I think I got tylenol cold night time which was on my approved list. How long is your antibiotic cycle? Mine was 5 days but it took me a full week to feel better. Hope you feel better soon!

  • Antibiotics will clear up the bacteria, not provide symptom relief. If you want to feel better right away you'll have to take something OTC in addition. If you don't have an approved meds list from the doctor, call her back and ask what you can take. Or try to get some help from the pharmacist like MelissaRae suggested.
  • Get a NeilMed SinuRinse (I got mine at Target), it will clear out the mucous from your sinuses.  It feels weird at first, but will help tremendously, and is well worth it.  It is also perfectly safe for pregnancy.  Use bottled water and warm it up, not tap water, that's what my OB told me to use.

  • I called my OB today, and the NP that I can't stand called me back wouldn't prescribe me anything, and told me to take Robitussin. So far it's NOT helping. Ugh, I am so aggravated. I'm taking Sudafed too and it's not helping. I didn't have my list of pg safe OTC meds, so I asked the pharmacist if I could take Tylenol Cold PM, and he said I could take any decongestants. I am so miserable, and these piddly pg ok medicines don't do sh!t. I got a Saline spray, but I don't think I administered correctly the first time, so that may be why it's not working.
