Pasteurized Ranch Dressing

Does anyone know who makes a pasteurized ranch or blue cheese dressing safe for pregnancy? I am trying to eat salads but am dying without my usual creamy options!

Re: Pasteurized Ranch Dressing

  • There is really not many places in the US that sell unpasteurized ranch/blue cheese and I am sure if they did, it wouldn't be made into salad dressing you can buy off the shelf at a grocery store.

  • Marzetti I know for a fact, but I'm pretty sure all the main brands are made with pasturized eggs/cheese/etc. I do have to say though, I've never looked into it and have eaten my Hidden Valley (at home) or whatever dressing the restaurant uses, as usual.

  • I think you'd be hard pressed to find dressing made with raw milk products.  I think it's safe to assume anything made with raw milk will be labelled.

    Exactly this.

  • So even though it just says "eggs" on the label that means they are pasteurized and safe to eat raw?

I'm sure they're pasteurized, or heck, it's probably just some weird egg by-product.  If you think about all the chemicals they put in salad dressings I'm sure it would kill off just about any living component in the dressing.  There's no way it's just straight raw egg in the dressing because it wouldn't be shelf-stable, you know?   I'd be more concerned about the other ingredients (i.e. chemicals) in the dressing than I would about the eggs or the dairy :)

If you're really worried about it you could always make your own.  It's not hard at all.

  • Ok, cool. I honestly had no idea these were okay to eat. I read that certain salad dressings were off limits because of their raw egg content, but maybe that's just at restaurants where they make their own (ie, Ceasar often has raw egg in it).

Anything made with raw egg such as caesar dressing, cookie dough and eggnog,  will be labeled and kept in the refrigerated section, as far as I know.

I'd be surprised if most dressings weren't pasteurized.

Exactly, I'd definitely avoid fresh caeser dressing unless maybe you were making it at home with pasteurized eggs.  But I'm sure the shelf-stable stuff is nothing to worry about.  :)

  • Anything that sits on a shelf and has an expiration date months in the future has been pasteurized to the point that all of the nutritional value was boiled off with the bacteria.

Look at a package of cookie dough - it will specifically say 1) keep refrigerated and 2) do not consume raw dough.  Anything with raw eggs will have this warning.  Enjoy your salad dressing!
