Speaking of "The Call"

We got THE CALL last Thursday! While I was gone to pick up food for myself and a co-worker. The birth mom is having a boy and could go into labor any minute now!! Never in our wildest dreams did we think placement would happen this quickly.

So my question is we found out today the birthmother wants to talk to us. (SO nervous!!) What kind of things did you talk with your birth mom about when you first met and/or talked to her.

It is so funny and I think it is totally awesome is she says part of why she picked us is because we wear t-shirts and flip flops - not fancy stuff. (Thank you Georgia weather!! lol)

Congratulations...

I suggest you be prepared w/open ended questions to drive the conversation if there are lulls.  But also be prepared not to have lulls... it all depends on personalities.

Congratulations! What an exciting time! We haven't gotten the call yet, so I don't have much input to help. 

I've started reading "The open adoption experience" by Lois Ruskai Melina and Sharon Kaplan Roszia. It is helpful and has a few chapters about "meeting each other". Maybe this could help.

Congratulations! That is so exciting!!! I was really nervous for our meeting with DD's BM, but it was completely comfortable and natural once we sat down to chat. Our social worker was with us, so she helped to make sure the conversation flowed smoothly. She told us about her interests and how she came to choose adoption for her baby. We told her more information about us (even though she knew a lot from our profile) and shared our journey to adoption. 

I'm not surprised that she was attracted to your relaxed attire. Our BM loved our dog and how close we are with our families as a few of the things she liked about us!

Congrats!

Will you have a SW there for the meeting? They will help guide the discussion. We just talked about ourselves, BM talked about herself/her family, etc. DD was already born, so she told us her birth story. We were nervous going in, but she was totally laid back and we had a great time.

My Adoption Coordinator was on the phone with us when we talked.  The BM asked why I wanted to adopt and the conversation flowed from there.  I asked about her childhood and things she liked to do like sports.  My Coordinator told me to just keep the conversation light and to not brag.  She said bragging can be a turn off.  Good luck and Congrats!!!
