Baby Names

Rachel?

Dh and I are still struggling with a girl name and we are in 3rd tri now.   Had no problems naming our son and had a boy named picked out for this time too.

We have went around in circles with so many girl names... none of which are right.

We have seriously considered Blythe (I could not get on board with it, DH loves it), Claire (DH could not get on board, I love), Sydney (DH loves, I like, but concerned I will regret as a little trendier than my normal name style), Alexandra (I love, DH ok with, but sounds bad with DS's name and our very long polish last name),

The newest one we are considering is Rachel.   Dh likes (but not loves it).  I like it as well, but worried it is dated.    It is kind of opposite of our Sydney problem (which is our other compromise name that we can both live with, but neihter love)... in that Rachel is not trendy at all, but sort of sounds dated like the 70s/80s to us.

Thoughts?   Is Rachel too dated?

Re: Rachel?

  • I love Rachel. It's a classic Biblical name.

  • I like Sydney and Claire the best of your choices. I think Rachel is a bit dated but go with what you both love. I dislike Blythe and Alexandra's okay. What about Alexis?

Since Sydney was on our list, I'll suggest others that we like: Taylor (DD's name), Paige, Summer, and Leia. Good luck!

  • I would not say Rachel is dated. It is a wonderful classic.

Yes, it had a popularity spike in the 1980s and 1990s (peak at #9 in 1996), but it has been a steady top-200 name since the 19th century. Besides, it's a well-known, easily pronounced Biblical name, used by different ethnic groups across the centuries. I wouldn't worry about it being too '80s.

  • I feel like it's pretty dated. It may just be the area, but I feel like I know so many Rachels. I like Sydney the best.

  • The youngest person that I know with this name (spelled Raechel) just turned 13.  One of my best friends (spelled Rachael) is in her mid 20's.  I kind of feel like it is a bit dated.  It is also classic, so using it wouldn't get a side-eye from me.  Of those you listed I like Blythe (it's a GP for me) and Claire.  I despise Sidney/Sydney - but I am opposed to place names in general, so that's a personal thing - there's nothing inherently wrong with the name itself.  Claire was on our list, so here are some others that we have/had.  Alice, Piper, Melinda, Camille, Lena, Corinne, Winifred (nn Winnie), Daphne, Delilah (I love this name but MIL has a dog w/ it, so it automatically got nixed), Charlotte, Chloe.

  • I agree with PPs, Rachel is classic.  I love it!
  • It's classic, not dated. It won't tie her to a particular decade like some of the trendier choices. I like it a lot.

  • Love Rachael. This spelling is much prettier.
  • I know a few Rachel's in their 20s, but I really love it.  It makes me think of a strong, sweet, independent girl.
