low blood sugar

hey guys... I have a question about low blood sugar.  I had this problem with my first pregnancy and now with my third its back..... my blood sugar crashes multiple times a day and sometimes i'll eat and it quickly crashes again.... it makes me feel weird and unstable.... do you have this problem too?   What do you do to combat it?

Re: low blood sugar

  • Google gestational diabetes and try to follow the diets....that way you stay stable.... Also go buy a blood sugar monitor if you don't have one and test 2 hours after eating......good luck....

  • If this is something that occurs on a regular basis, talk to your doctor about it.

  • I had very very severe hypoglycemia in the 3rd trimester with my son last time.  (Almost fainted multiple times.)  Met with a nutritionist and she said the same thing as PP - that hypoglycemia is controlled very similarly to diabetes.  Small frequent meals with a healthy protein, veggies, and complex carbs - with limits on any simple carbs and sugars.  Obviously you aren't limiting sugar because of diabetic concerns but the body's inability to process them correctly can lead to hypoglycemia.  Proteins, veggies, and healthy carbs (think multi-grain and fiber) are much much easier for the pancreas to be able to maintain stable blood sugar levels.

Good luck.  This was without a doubt the hardest thing to deal with in my last pregnancy and I'm dreading the possibility of dealing with it again.  :(

  • I've been hypoglycemic my whole life and it gets really bad during pregnancy. I have to have food by my bed so if I wake up in the middle of the night or in the morning, I can cram something in fast if I feel it dipping. The fact that I'm a grazer has helped me out a lot. I eat every couple of hours and that usually keeps it in check.
