June 2012 Moms

Name question

We are team green so this might be a moot point when LO gets here- but- my dh is set on Nora James for a girl ( James is in honor of my mom; it's her maiden name) but I like Ellis James, too.  I'm worried Ellis and James combined is way too masculine, but Nora James sounds a lot like Norah Jones? Any input would be much appreciated!

Re: Name question

  • I like Ellis James for a girl.

  • Tough one. I like Ellis but I agree that w/ James as the mn it is rather masculine. Nora James doesn't make me think of Nora Jones until you mention it but I wouldn't let it stop you b/c it's not like James is your ln - it's just the mn.

Is James as a mn set in stone? Ellis is nice but I think needs a softer mn if it's a concern for you.

  • I would do Nora James or Ellis with a different middle name. I have never heard Ellis for a girl, so Ellis James I automatically think boy.

But the more I think about it, it's pretty, but would be great with a softer middle name. What about Jamie, or Jane?

  • Ellis James does sound too masculine. I second the idea of using Jane or Jamie instead.

  • Yes Nora James does sound similar to Nora Jones, but normally you don't call the child by their first and middle name so it's really not an issue.

  • I think Ellis is definitely a boy's name. Why not Elle or Ella instead?

  • Are you planning to call her by first and middle name together?  If not, it probably doesn't matter that it sounds like Norah Jones.  I can't tell you any of my friend's kid's middle names.

Ellis sounds like a last name to me, instead of being masculine.  I'm sure folks will flame, but you could change up the spelling a bit to make it more feminine....like Elliss or Ellyss.

  • I agree that Ellis and James combined is too masculine for a girl.  I think if you are going with an androgynous name like Ellis then the MN should be definitively girly (for a girl).

I don't think Nora James sounds too much like Nora Jones.  But then, I'm partial to Nora- I think that name is beautiful!

  • I think Ellis James is too masculin.

  • I think Nora James is beautiful for a little girl.  And I definitely didn't think of Norah Jones when I read the name, so I don't think you have anything to worry about.  And Ellis James does sound a bit too masculine for my taste.  You can always keep them both on the list and see what you think she looks like best.  Who knows, you may end up on team blue!

  • I also think Elise James would be pretty

  • I do think Ellis James is too masculine. What about Eleanor James (i.e. Ellie James)?
