Regular crib mattress or lightweight??

I knind of wanted a regular 'heavy' mattress but the lullaby earth lightweight is only $150 and seems like it would still be firm enough. The mattress only weighs 7lbs.

In your opinion which one is "safer/better" lightweight or regular?

or is there really no difference in safety? and

What type of mattress did you choose?

Thanks ladies!

Re: Regular crib mattress or lightweight??

  • I didn't know there was a difference.  I bought our mattress at Target, it was either a Sealy or a Serta, I can't remember which, and it was about $100.  It was super light, I was able to carry it one handed.  It had a crib side and a toddler side, so it can be used later in the toddler bed.

  • According to Baby Bargains, there is no difference in safety. But the lighter ones (made of foam vs. coil) are easier to change sheets. I have no experience, that's just what the book says!

  • I don't believe there is any difference in safety. It's the firmness you want to be concerned about, and you can check that by pressing down firmly on the center of the mattress and seeing how quickly it snaps back. The faster the better.

I opted for a lightweight foam mattress (which is still very, very firm). I like that it's lighter, so it's much easier to lift up (even with one hand), which will likely come in handy when changing crib sheets in the middle of the night (or whenever).
