1st Trimester

Low progesterone?

Anyone taking progesterone bed their numbers were low?  I experienced red bleeding on Friday, had a sono today and saw the heartbeat (very reassuring!) and doc says he wants me on progesterone.

I need advice.  Not sure if I should take it or not, as the side effects seem scary (birth defects, blood clots... oh my.)

Re: Low progesterone?

  • I am on 200 mgs of prometrium (progesterone) twice a day until about week 12  (I am 4 wks tomorrow and started taking them (well, vaginally inserting) thought they are the oral kind you can also use them like suppositories as my dr. recommended...

I have a history of losses and often have low progesterone so for me it wasnt a question I was for sure going to use them with pregnancy #4 whenever it did come...

I know the side effects can be scary...but the latter (in my case a loss potentially) is even more scary and I just had to use them even for my own sanity..many women use them and for me so far the side effects are non-existant.

It is very much your decision and do whatever you feel is best for YOU and your pregnancy..GL hun!! :)

  • I'm on compounded progesterone suppositories until 10-12 weeks. Only side effects I have are tiredness and discharge from the suppository itself.

  • Where did you hear that progesterone suppositories caused birth defects?you are just adding more of a hormone already in your body.

  • The insert that came with the samples my OB gave me said that.

  • I'm on progesterone after 2 losses and being slightly low. IMO the benefits outweigh the risks. I have been on it since 5weeks and have had no problems except dizziness in the beginning.

All of this. I have been on progesterone for my past 2 pregnancies (not counting this one) and both boys were fine.

  • I'm on a low dose because my progresterone levels were a little lower than what my doctor wanted - but not scary low at the 2nd draw - and I have not had any problems except the dizziness and usual pregnancy symptoms that are caused by higher progesterone (nausea, tiredness, etc.).  As the other women have mentioned, progesterone is important for building the placenta and uterine environment so when it is low it can threaten an otherwise healthy pregnancy.

  • I have the same low progesterone problem. My doctor started me on 100mg 3 times a day. I am going to take it, anything to help save the pregnancy. Their are some side effects, but if it keeps the baby okay, I say go for it. God Bless!

  • I'm on prometrium vaginally 100mg at night for history of low progesterone.  Only side effects I've noticed are normal pregnancy side effects that additional progesterone can enhance like tiredness, sore boobs, water retention/water weight gain.  I got put on progesterone with DD at 6 weeks due to bleeding and bloodwork came back that my progesterone had dropped instead of increased which can be a sign of MC.  I fully believe that had I not got on my supplements I may have lost DD.  She turned out perfect and healthy and I was able to carry her full term.  With this LO they just automatically put me on progesterone once I got my BFP.
