Natural Birth

Food during labor

I'll hopefully be going into labor any day now.  I understand that your digestive system slows down during labor, but that a lot of times you still need food to keep your energy up.  What do you all suggest for food during labor?  I do have honey sticks and italian ices on hand already.

Re: Food during labor

  • I have heard (from my doula and our birthing class) to eat things that are easy to chew and not very acidic, as you tend to throw up during transition.  They suggested watermelon, blueberries, a Popsicle ect...

  • I had Sunny D juice boxes.  They aren't as acidic as orange juice and gave me a good sugar boost.  Otherwise, lots of honey.

  • I was slamming down food throughout my entire labor the last time.  I ate a full breakfast in the beginning, with eggs and bacon, then I had some chicken noodle soup halfway through.  While I was pushing I was taking bites of cheese and spoons of honey for energy between contractions.

I couldn't eat at all during labor.  My water broke and then an hour later my contractions were two minutes apart and stayed that way for 8 hours with lots of throwing up.  So I would recommend having some Emergen-C to drink for keeping your strength up

  • I ate plain pasta and peanut butter sandwiches.

  • I ended up only drinking juice (at my doula's insistence). Everything else made me gag.

  • Eat what appeals.

I had spring rolls in the afternoon, a pulled pork sandwich for supper, and a DQ Blizzard about 5 hours before giving birth.

    I did not throw up.

  • I had a turkey & avocado sandwich, an In & Out cheeseburger, strawberries, apple slices, sun chips, soft granola bars, apple sauce - pretty much whatever I could convince our best friend to bring in for me that wasn't already in my L&D bag.

  • In early labor, when I was still very much functional, I had 2 over easy eggs on toast, a chocolate pudding cup, some tea, some fruit, and an energy bar. During the more intense bit toward the end I could only stomach Recharge and a spoonful of honey.

  • coconut water! nature's gatorade :)
  • I loved having plain Greek Yogurt with apricot jam and a handful of granola cereal.  Protein, sugar, carbs...it was perfect.

  • I did apple juice, lots of water and towards the end of my 17 hr labor my doula insisted I take a couple bites of a protein bar.  Thank goodness I did, I needed the energy for pushing!

  • Eat whatever appeals to you. I had honey sticks, coconut water, nachos, and pizza at different points, LOL!
  • Not sure if there is any difference if you are induced, but when I had my first, while in labor I tried eating crackers and water, but it all came back up..so I don't think food during is a good idea....:(
