Bladder infection....

My midwife just called with results from a urin test and said it was positive for a bladder infection. Has anyone else had this happen in early pregnancy? They suggested that I get on an anti-biotic as soon as possible. But i want to see if it will go away on its own. Any advise? Whats worse for the baby, the anti-biotics or infection? Help please!

Re: Bladder infection....

  • I did last time. The infection is worse for the baby, it can cause slow development, little to no weight gain along with a mess of other problems.

When you have a bacterial infection, you don't "wait for it to go away."  You take antibiotics that will kill the bacteria.  Those little guys can spread up to your kidneys if left untreated.  After your kidneys, it's a quick jump to your bloodstream and then you can end up septic, which is a far far worse situation than a simple bladder infection.  Take the meds and feel better!

All of this.  Take the antibiotics.

Exactly!  You don't want to take a chance that it could turn into a uterine infection.  Take your meds!

This. I don't know if you ever had a UTI before but they can be painful and you can actually have blood in your urine. Take the meds. Also, I had one and they prescribed me meds that were safe for the baby; they'll do the same for you.

  • I agree with everyone.  Take the meds, and talk to doctor about taking cranberry pills in the future, it may help with bladder infections in the future.

  • Thank you all! I will be sure to get the meds and take care of the problem. I have never had one before so I didn't even know i had an infection. No symptoms. I had them test again to be sure and will start antibiotics as soon as we get the results.

  • I just got a call from my midwife too saying i have one as well and I had no clue! I have no pain and I really haven't been peeing too frequently but i'll be taking the antibiotics as soon as i get them. I too have never had one in my life- goes to show babies turn everything upside down from the beginning:-)
