Pregnant after 35

Update to D@mnit post

So, I went in and did all my blood work early this morning - MW called this afternoon and my 1 hour results were high enough that she's not making me do the 3 hr (I guess that's a blessing of time), but I have to start testing my sugars tomorrow & have to see a perinatalogist this week. Now, not only am I pissed because I have GD again (had it last time too), but I'm scared because she didn't have the a1c numbers yet to see what my blood sugar has looked like the last 3 months & I'm a bit freaked because if they were high over the first 2 mo baby could have been hurt. Damn it, Damn it, Damn it!!!

  • the baby really isn't effected by your blood sugar until 2nd tri.  I think thats why they don't do it right off the bat.  Hope this helps!

I don't mean to raise any issues but the first trimester is very vital when it comes to the development of your baby... I am a type one diabetic and the doctors talked about the development of organs and how it affects the LO.

  • Odd.  When I talked to my doc about it they didn't seem to be really concerned about my diabetes during first tri.  I have been a diabetic for the last 10 years.  They said they get really concerned about the control of sugar during 2nd and third tri to keep the babies from growing too large and not developing properly during the growth.

  • Out of curiosity... how high WAS you blood sugar? I didn't know they could skip the 3 hr test since the 1 hr isn't a fasting test.

Big hugs! I hope they get those A1C results to you soon, and that they aren't so bad.

    Booooo... I'm so sorry :(

  • So, best results I could hope for - the a1c was suppose to be between 4 & 6, and was 6.1 - so on the high of expected, but not out of control. Sugars over 3 mo averaged 125, so again, above what is hoped for (120), but not terribly high. I'm feeling a bit better. I have a high-level ultrasound and appt with the perinatalogist first thing Friday morning - I'm feeling more confident overall. I know there is still some concern due to higher than desired sugars, but I'm now not fearing serious defects.

  • I was hospitalized for a week at 5 weeks pregnant with my DD because they decided I needed drastic sugar controls quick.  I was able to avoid it this pregnancy by having all my ducks in a row (3 weeks of sugars, 5x a day, already on MDI of insulin and my more strict diet) by the time I visited the MFM.  They do not joke about diabetes in this area.
