1st Trimester

1st appointment info. (total noob ? I know)

ok, I know this is a total noob post and there is stuff about it all over the web, but I want some real women perspectives on this. What are some of the things I can expect to happen during my first appointment? Like what kinds of tests and things, (especially baring in mind I've never even been to a gyno)? And what are some things I should bare in mind to talk to my doctor about since this will be the first time she's meeting, let alone treating me? I'm just curious so I'm not surprised I hate surprises, especially at the doctor, I'm not a fan of doctors so I don't really know how to handle this stuff.

also, my mother told me the fact that when I was born she was RH negative might be relevant, is this something I should tell my doc or even something that will affect me, I know it sounds dumb, but I don't even know what it means.

Thanx in advance,

Dani Z.

Re: 1st appointment info. (total noob ? I know)

  • It depends on the office.  My experience the 1st time around...

Very first appointment I met with a nurse and I got a folder of pamphlets.  It covered testing options for the baby, as well as a sheet of medicines I could take while pregnant and a pamphlet about cord blood donation.  This was for first time mothers only.

The next appointment was around 10 weeks.  Weighed, peed on a test strip, got a pap smear, internal/vaginal u/s and spoke with doctor.  Then an order for bloodwork and peeing in a cup was given to me that I took to the lab to have like 4 vials of blood taken along with the pee sample.

Questions that you may want to discuss- what hospital do they deliver at, amount of weight you should gain during pregnancy, what symptoms you've been having?  You may want to buy a book about pregnancy and go over the first couple of months to see if that raises any questions for you.  You may also want to know how often you'll see your doctor, and how many u/s they perform.

    Good luck.

  • They'll do basic intake stuff:

-check your vitals (height, weight, blood pressure, temperature, etc)

-they'll ask about all your family health histories. from both mommy-to-be and daddy-to-be (so start gathering information from your parents if you aren't sure)

-since you haven't been to a gyno, they'll do a pelvic exam (very thorough, and kind uncomfortable, but nothing painful)

-doc will feel your uterus to *guess* how far along you are.

-DEPENDING ON YOUR OFFICE (please, do NOT get your hopes up since IDK how your OB works) you MIGHT get a dating ultrasound.

i may be forgetting some stuff, but the first appointment is never really TOO exciting.

  • My first appointment was long. I was transferred from my Reproductive Endocrinologist who had already confirmed my pregnancy.

Step 1: Intake. Vitals, pee in cup

Step 2: Sonogram. Normally this would be a dating ultrasound for most moms, but since my pregnancy had already been confirmed by my RE, it was unnecessary. However, I am pregnant with twins and baby A had been measuring behind at me previous exam so my RE requested the OB do a sonogram.

Step 3: Meet with OB in her office to talk about risks, options, health and delivery questions. Just a general getting to know you conversation. This was my first time seeing her.

Step 4: Breast and pelvic exam, cervical culture (not a PAP, as I had one in February).

    Step 5: Blood draw

Step 6: Meet with financial coordinator

  • My 1st time around my 1st appointment was an intake. We went over family history, patient history, Q&A and I had a pap-smear. I had a dating ultrasound, too.

I just scheduled my first appointment for this pregnancy and it'll be the same, except no ultrasound.

  • They usually check for your blood type at the appointment. You might want to mention your mom is RH negative anyways, because if the blood work shows that you are too then you will need a shot if you start any random spotting.

"Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?...But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." Matthew 6:26-27&33-34
  • I've never been to the gyno before either. I went May 31st. The nurse called me back and weighed me and had me pee in a cup. We then went into the room and she asked questions about my health [any cancer in family, symptoms I was having, first day of my last period, etc.] and then the Dr. came in and called my husband and I into his office to review the health history and to use this circle thing to figure out my due date.  Then he walked us back to the room and handed me this giant cover and said to undress from waist down and cover myself and he would be right in, he then came in and explained everything he was doing before he did it. He ended up doing a pap smear [the stick this metal thing inside of you and it has clamps which help open you up and then he stuck about 3 things inside which was uncomfortable ]since I've never had one and never been to the gyno before. after that he did an ultrasound to confirm my due date and how far along I was. Then told me to clean up and get dressed and go back into his office and he discussed everything and said i was healthy and baby was healthy and there wasn't any restrictions or anything and then he walked us out and gave us a bag that had some formula in it and a folder with information and what to expect in the upcoming visits.
