Is it the NT scan? I decline that scan because it doesn't tell you anything definitively & I'm not willing to do an amnio if anything comes back suspicious.
Technically speaking, the sequential screening test is a combination of 3 tests - and you do not get the results until after all 3 are done and they put all the results in a formula. The result you get is a risk # for Down Syndrome (Trisomy 21), T18, and for neural tube defects.
The 3 tests are: NT scan (an ultrasound to measure the space in the neck), blood work in 1st trimester (usually done when you get your NT scan), plus blood work in 2nd trimester around 15-18w. Again, if your OB is opting you to get the sequential screening, you don't get any results until after your 2nd tri b/w comes back.
The risk or odds results you get is based on your test results PLUS your age-related risk. The younger you are, the starting odds is better.
In my case, I had it done. I'll be 39 when I deliver. The average odds for down syndrome for 39 year-olds is 1:110. My test results improved my odds to 1:1200.
The sequential screening test is a better test than just the 1st tri screen or quad screen. It is accurate up to about 92%.
Actually, you get preliminary results after the first U/S and bloodwork, and then final results after the 15-week bloodwork. So yes, you do get results right away...well, in a few days. The first set detects 80% of Downs cases, the second 90%.
Also, you no longer need to get an amnio if the results from the sequential screen are bad. There is a new blood test you can do instead -- totally noninvasive.
We go for part 1 of the sequential screen next week. T&P.
Yeah, it's the NT scan. So if something comes back suspicious you have to continue onto the next tests or can you decline? Im 22, baby is due the day after my birthday so Ill be 22-23 when I deliver.

You can decline any screening tests you don't want. In fact, you can decline the NT scan as well. Statistically, at age 22, your odds of having a child with chromosomal abnormalities is very low. Many women your age decline screening tests, but it's totally up to you. And I also suggest you discuss your concerns with your OB.
