C-sections

c-sections limit?

is there a limit on how many c-sections you can have?

Re: c-sections limit?

  • I asked a similar question after my c-section. I've always heard that doctors kind of like to keep it to three, but there are people on here who have had four or five. It all depends on how you heal and what kind of c-section you had.

  • My OB has a patient who has had SEVEN c-sections and she's healed up fine after each one. According to her, there isn't necessarily a limit.

  • After three is when doctors seem to generally get more nervous, but I believe they can get a feel as they are doing a c-section as to how well you're healed up from the last ones, which can give them an idea of how good a candidate you are for additional c-sections.

  • My OB has never given me a limit. She has told me that anything over 4 c-sections is tough on the mother's body. She takes it on a case by case basis. It depends on how you heal.......

I do hear other doctors limit it to 3........

  • i've heard #3 is the limit. and i go in next week to decide if i want to do c-section again, or vbac, but honestly after hearing the risks of vbac i'm almost set on c-section again. but i don't want to be limited to just one more child.

Summary: Women who have more than 3 c/s have a great risk - 12% vs 4 % of developing a major complication, greater risk of having a minor complication - 44%, and having thick adhesions (potential for future complications). Major complications, included blood loss, internal damage, hysterectomy etc. Having had a major complication with my 3rd, I won't be playing the odds any more times.
  • so say you have had 3 c sections and get pregnant again....what do they do then?

They do another c-section. That's the boat I'm in now. I have had 3 c-sections and am PG with #4.

  • My OB said she would take care of me up to 3 c-sections (this will be my 3rd) but anything after that gets too risky.  My friend is having her 4th c/s in October though and I know a few other people who have had 4+.  I've mostly heard no more than three though.

  • My OB doesn't like going past 3 but everything is dependent on your last c/s as well.

  • My old OB (the one who delivered DD) told me no more than 2 c-sections. I knew this was not something I wanted and also knew that it was possible to have at least 4 without complications (my aunt and a few friends have had that many). I switched OB's before I got pregnant with my DS and had a talk with my OB regarding this. He told me he has done as many as 7 on someone. He said yes risks increase with each one but it also depends on how you heal. He told me that he would let me know if he thought I would be ok during each c-section.

I was given the OK 2 and a half weeks ago to go a head with another one when DH and I were ready, which wont be for a while. Although I am hoping sooner but I would like to finish school first.

  • My OB says it all depends on how you heal and how much scar tissue is present at each one. He actually said that i could possibly have another but we're done!

I'm about to deliver #4.  Everything has been smooth sailing! My doctor tells me how the old tissues/scar looks after each delivery.
