My doc told me that as long as I was not takin narcotics and I felt like I could stomp on the brake hard if I needed to, I was fine to drive. I drove at one week pp this time.
The first time I drove was about a week and a half out, but not with kids in the car - I just drove over to Target for formula. The first time I drove with the baby was to DD's 2 week check up. My OB said I could drive as soon as I was off the prescription pain relievers.

I took myself to the grocery store the day after I got home from the hospital. My dr told me 2 weeks, I told her I don't follow rules... she just laughed, she knows I'm a terrible patient. I didn't take any narcotics once I left hospital, and I felt fine, not much pain.
My discharge instructions specifically stated 2 weeks to give time for the anesthesia to wear off. Of course I felt fine way before then, but I did wait the full two weeks. God forbid I had been in an accident and they'd found out I'd just had major surgery, I wouldn't have wanted to get myself into all that extra trouble, you know?
My OB is largely leaving it up to me and how I feel. He told me to be sure I felt like I could safely hit the brake pedal and do what I needed to do in an emergency situation before I start driving. DD1's daycare is about a 3 minute from our house on neighborhood roads, so I will see how I feel and probably pick her up a few times before trying a bigger drive.

my dr. wanted me to not only be off the pain meds but be able to stomp on the brakes if i needed to. i definitely didn't think i could do that just a few days after surgery. i think the first time i drove anywhere was at about 2.5 weeks. i also did a practice run down my street stomping on the brakes just to be sure.
