Babies and Sun

So, I know that babies are to stay out of the sun for the first 6 months. I also know no sunscreen, and I've read all the posts about sunblocks that are okay, and even done some of my own research. I also realize that it's not feasible to keep DS out of the sun 100% so I'm wondering what are all of you doing with your LOs? So far I have bought a sun hat and pretty much keep DS in the shade or under his canopy in his car seat or stroller, but I hate that he gets so hot. This weekend we've been invited to a pool birthday party and I would love to take him in the pool, but I don't know...so what have you done, or are planning to do? Thanks!

  • if you want to take him in the pool and be shaded, they make floaty things for babies with a canopy on them. you could also get him a rashguard type swim top with spf built in to help block some sun. if you have a pack and play you could bring that and set it up in a shady spot so he can play and move and maybe wont get so hot and sweaty.

  • Besides a plethora of funny looking hats, we bought a sun shade thing from Amazon.com.  It's like a tent with only 2 1/2 walls.  It's worked well so far for the park and backyard.

Which one did you get? There are so many of them that I get overwhelmed when I look on amazon at them.

  • We paid a little bit extra for the one that pops up automatically.  It's called the Shade Shack Instant Pop Up Family Beach Tent and Sun Shelter.  Again, it's worked well so far and we've used it quite a bit because my son LOVES to be outside.  It almost always stops him from crying if we just go sit or walk outside. I'm already fearing winter.
  • We use sunblock on DD. Where we live, we cant be out in the sun at all without sunblock. It's just too hot. If we're going for a walk, I use a hat and a thin muslin blanket to block her from the sun. If we go to the pool, she wears sunblock. I also keep a hat on her and we just got her the pool floaty so she stays pretty well shaded. I believe that a sunburn would be far worse than sunblock for a few hours.

She gets a bath afterwards. She usually falls sleep after we go swimming so when she wakes up, it's bath time.

  • I use all the normal jazz for walks / errands = huge floppy hat, muslin blankets, light long-sleeved onesies, sun shades on stroller / car seat.  However, we live in TX and there are some instances where it is safer to put sunscreen on LO than not.  We use the "right" kind and bathe her immediately afterwards... She's probably only worn it for an hour at a time, tops.
