Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Does army crawling count as crawling and a little vent

My DD is 8 months and has been army crawling for almost two months now.  She is so good at it that I really think there is no motivation for her to get up on all fours.  I know lots of babies never crawl on all fours and that crawling is not a milestone physicians worry about.

Having said that - (here's my vent) my nephew is 6 weeks younger than DD and is crawling on all fours.  I have worked so hard not to compare or be competitive but my MIL and SIL make comments that drive me crazy.  MIL has told me "that baby is legitimately crawling!"  And the other day when the two babies were together I commented on them crawling and she said "DD is low crawling."

Sorry for the long rambling - the main question here is can I count her army crawling as crawling since it's been two months and she's very efficient?

  • My LO is almost 11 months now. (I'm visiting from the older boards lol) He is still army crawling. I do consider it crawling. It gets him places so it counts to me. All my family and Inlaws think its funny that he does it that way. I wouldn't let there stupid comments get to me. I'm kind of glad he does the army crawling...I think he isn't as fast compared to if he was up on all fours. Although he is pretty fast.

  • Thanks for the "tell them to be quiet" comments.  I'm a first time mom and trying soooo hard to not let the little comments bother me, but somedays (like today) I get thinking and get annoyed.

     Well then DD is crawling!

  • Army crawling is crawling according to the What to Expect the First Year book.  Some kids don't crawl at all and go straight to walking - DD did this.  Each child is different try no to compare.  I am sure your child will do something else first and you can say something similar.

  • Army crawling is still crawling. I wish my LO would do that, he just pushes himself in reverse and then cries because the things he want keep getting farther away.

  • She's moving around on her own...I count that as crawling! Some babies are just more efficient and inventive on how they get around Smile

  • your lo is crawling :D our lo's may have not perfected the all 4 crawling but for all purposes they can get what they want and figure out how to get it so therefore they are crawling.

  • My son army crawled from 6 months to 11 months. We thought he'd skip traditional crawling altogether since he was pulling up cruising etc. Then at 11 months he learned to crawl normally and focused on that for another 5 months before walking.

It totally counts. Just a different strategy, and keeps your floors cleaner than regular crawling ;)

Love the clean floors!  It is sort of embrassing sometimes how dirty her clothes get from crawling on the kitchen floor!
