For those of you who had losses near or after 12 weeks would you mind sharing what the cause was? I am totally uneducated about what might cause a PG to not work out after 1st trimester and because I'm a nervous Nellie am already worrying about it.
TIA!
Re: For those with late losses...
Please don't worry yourself about things like this. There is only a very small chance that anything will happen after 12 weeks.
No-one was ever able to figure out what caused our loss but we do know I had a placenta filled with clots and we were told it was possible I had a clot form behind the placenta which then caused the placenta to pull away from the uterus. If you want details I'll share but really, I don't want to give you anything more to worry about.
Kelly, Mom to Christopher Shannon 9.27.06, Catherine Quinn 2.24.09, Trey Barton lost on 12.28.09, Therese Barton lost on 6.10.10, Joseph Sullivan 7.23.11, and our latest, Victoria Maren 11.15.12
Secondary infertility success with IVF, then two losses, one at 14 weeks and one at 10 weeks, then success with IUI and then just pure, crazy luck. Expecting our fifth in May as the result of a FET.
This Cluttered Life
My loss was after 12 weeks, but we found out at 12 weeks that she wouldn't survive. We chose not to terminate, so we lost her at almost 16 weeks. In our case, they saw she had fetal hydrops at our NT scan, which is basically 100% fatal when it appears that early in a pregnancy. The cause of the hydrops was most likely severe heart defects, which were most likely due to her having Down Syndrome. We had weekly scans until her heart stopped, so we were able to see around 14 weeks that her heart had severe defects and we did CVS testing which showed she had T21. So basically, T21 was the root cause of all the problems.
In our case, no one could understand how she survived so long. It was a situation that typically would have ended in a 1st trimester loss, but she hung around much longer than she should have been able to. I want to add that I thought there was something wrong from the beginning and talked to the nurse, OB, and my MFM about my concerns because she was measuring 2 weeks behind at the first ultrasound and the dating fluctuated a lot at every ultrasound. Everyone just kept saying my dates were wrong (it was an unassisted pregnancy) until the NT scan. So basically, we started seeing problems at 6 weeks, but nothing was diagnosed until 12.
IVF #1 - BFP (6dt)
Unassisted Pregnancy #2 - lost at 15w6d due to T21, severe heart defects, and fetal hydrops
3 IUIs to get BFP w/baby #2
Lost baby #2 at nearly 12 weeks (D&C on 9/19/14)
I went into labor at 23 weeks, not 100% clear whether it was caused by placental abruption or if the labor caused the abruption (in subsequent pregnancies I showed signs of preterm labor again but we were super cautious, and after delivering my daughter early term the OB said there were signs of placental abruption again, so may have risks for both). Ultimately, though, they largely attributed the labor/abruption/whatever to carrying twins being too much for me (and I'm not a tiny girl so not sure why) and potentially the fact that it started as a triplet pregnancy adn my body still acted as if it was one which makes it even riskier.
There's so little you can do that it's best to not think about these things, and they are rare, unfortunately we all tend to remember the scary stories. Best of luck!
I had a loss at 19w. For us they dont know what caused his heart to stop beating or why he stopped growing. Some people have a medical reason and some just have gods way of saying not yet.
Dont work yourself up. After 12w the chances of you losing the baby drop very low. Dont worry about it until a Dr give you a reason to. Enjoy your pregency. This is time you will never get back.
Twins born too early at 23 weeks due to incompetent cervix
FET #1, IUI #1, 2, 3, 4 - all BFN
IVF #3 BFP!!! IT'S A BOY! Born July 16th, 2011
FET #2 BFP! Due February 15, 2013
My loss was at 22 weeks with twins. They have not been able to fully determine the cause but most of the specialists we saw think it was the "twin" factor". The twins are a strain and some even said dangerous to carry.
This time we only put in one embryo and had success---a few more weeks until out little man arrives.
