Delayed Cord Clamping

Has anyone done any reading/reasearch on delayed cord clamping?  I was just doing a bit of reading and am curious what other's thought are who has looked into this.  I am seeing some medical articles that seem to indicate a 1 min delay but then some other sites that say until it stops pulsing.  I had never heard abou this with #1 so wondering what you have found out/heard?  I am going to enquire when I see my OB next week.

Re: Delayed Cord Clamping

  • I am planning to put in my birth plan for the cord to be cut once it stops pulsating. That point signals that baby is getting all the blood back that he is going to get. I have read articles on this subject and there is a clear medical benefit to delayed cord clamping. Seems like a no brainier to me. Though I should add, I am not planning to try to bank his cord blood either. I am not sure that these two things are compatible.

  • I have never heard about this, sound like it's something I should look into though.
  • If we don't donate I plan to do a delayed clamping (until it stops pulsing).

Pretty much this. Delaying until cord naturally stops pulsing means a much higher blood volume in baby.

I'm in this camp as well.

  • Thank you for posting this. I had not heard of this but now I'm going to look into it and consider what we should do. I had been hemming and hawing about cord blood banking but recently got a Lucie's List email that helped to clear all that up for me ... and we are still considering donating. So many things to consider!!

  • We did this with our LO. It's becoming fairly common.  It is supposed to reduce the risk of the baby having anemia early on by increasing the amount of blood/iron the baby gets from you.   I saw a study that said maximum benefit is achieved by waiting 3 minutes, so we put in our birth plan to wait until 3 minutes, or until it stopped pulsing, whichever came later.

  • We waited until the cord stopped pulsing.  My midwife says she rarely gets any babies with anemia or jaundice because of this.  She has does over 600 births.  I think it is healthier for baby to get their complete exchange of blood before cutting the cord.
  • My doctor said it's pretty standard for them to wait 2 minutes or so.  During that time baby is on your belly and they are checking them out anyhow....so it takes a few minutes....
