Stopping Work Early or Working until the End?

Copied from September 2012 Board:

Are any of you planning on stopping work at a certain point before the babies arrive?

I'm debating on if I should or not. I definitely want to. If it were up to me I'd be home now because I am so tired, but financially we could use the money for a little longer.  I'm torn because part of me doesn't want to be here, I'd much rather be in bed. (Wouldn't we all!) But I also know there is a good chance these babies could be born before 37 weeks so I may as well suck it up and stick it out for the next 10 to 12 weeks. :/

Re: Stopping Work Early or Working until the End?

  • I think I worked until 35 weeks and then from home until I delivered at 37 weeks. I then went back to work 4 weeks after having the girls. (personal choice). I think that if you can stick it out to bank a bit more money it would be a good idea. If you are starting to get too uncomfortable or are having complications is stop. The health and growth of your babies needs to take priority, but if you can push it to 33 weeks, try for it.

  • I stopped at 31w4d. I'm a teacher and that was our last day of school. Honestly, I could've gone a few more days (32ish weeks), but now I am miserable. I have carpal tunnel, PUPPs, and I'm pretty sure I pulled my groin yesterday.

I think it's such an individual decision b/c everyone feels different towards the end. If you're feeling up to it, then stay and get paid. If not, rest and bake your babies.

  • I was put on bedrest at 30 weeks, but had planned on working part time as long as possible. I dropped to part time at 26 weeks. By 32 weeks, I probably would not have been able to do my job-I was very uncomfortable and I'm on my feet all day at work.

It depends on how physical your job is. I have a desk job and at 28 weeks started working from home 2 days a week, at 30 weeks I went to 3 days a week at home. I was in the office one day on the week I delivered at 37 weeks.  I was more comfortable at home and able to get lots done.  It also kept me occupied rather than counting off the minutes until my due date.

  • I plan to stay as long as possible, but I do have the option to work from home.  I'm 29 weeks today... I would love to hang in there until 35 weeks and then work from home, but if I get too uncomfortable, I'm not opposed to working from home a few days a week and coming in the other days.  I have a desk job so it's not physical at all - although I am still exhausted by the time I get home!
  • At 20w, I limited my days to 2 days in the office and 2 days from home. At 29w6d, I was having too many contractions and my doc asked if I could switch to 100% working from home. I hope to continue working from home until the babies arrive.

    Good luck!

  • My goal was 31 weeks and my doc just put me out at 30 weeks. I pushed myself too,  it's time to be home!
  • For me, we only get the 12 weeks of FMLA, so any time I took before delivery would cut into my time at home post-delivery with the twins. I have an office job, so I plan on working up until the end (from home if I have to) unless I am ordered on strict bed rest.  I realllllllllly don't want to have to go back to work sooner than 12 weeks after delivery!

  • I'm a teacher, and I worked until the end (delivered at 37 weeks 1 day- was supposed to be 38, but baby A started having cord flow issues).  I did absolutely nothing outside of work until the last week or 2 because I had contractions when I walked.  At that point I didn't care anymore if I had contractions, and I started doing some shopping again.  I was super uncomfortable and exhausted but I still think I must have felt better than some pregnant MoMs do.  To me the paycheck was worth it.

  • I had every intention of working till my water broke, but PTL came out of nowhere and put me on bedrest at 28 weeks.  Had the boys at 34 weeks after my water broke.

  • I'd say there is a chance you won't be given the oppurtunity to make the decision, your babies and your doctor might make it for you. The thing with twins pregnacies is a lot fo times it good until it's not. I'd be prepared to be out by 28 weeks and if you make it further, lucky you! I was out at 16 weeks.

  • I stopped work at 30 weeks.  I was too worried about delivering early.  I ended up in the hospital on mag for pretermbodyor and delivered at 36 weeks.  But u never know and need to do what is best for you and your children.  Listen to your body and your doctor.

  • I had tons of Braxton Hicks so I dropped down to part-time at 28 weeks. My MFM pulled me completely at 33 weeks due to blood pressure and I was able to hold on until 36&5.

  • I'm a teacher and school ended for the summer when I was 17w. I asked my doctor if I'd be able to go back for this current school year and she said we'd play it by ear but she doubted it (the school year started when I was 28 or 29w). I had an irritable uterus and she really wanted me resting. I did not attempt to go back. At 32w, we started having growth issues with Baby A so I would have been pulled out at that point anyway.
