Natural Birth

Struggling...need a pep talk, please.

I know I'm not even 41 weeks yet, but I'm starting to get really pathetic.  I've been very lucky to have very little pain/complications this whole pregnancy, but the baby is sitting on a nerve on my back and I've been having pain and limping for a week now.  As of a few days ago, I can't get comfortable in any position and even laying down to sleep hurts.  It's discouraging because I know walking and staying active would help get things going but I can barely limp around the house.

I'm worried that this nerve pain is going to make NB harder and my OB's offer of  "a little help to get things going" is just frustrating because I know in my heart that it's best to wait it out for now.

I've still been working, but didn't go in today after my doctor's appointment- because I'm just miserable and almost break down crying when people ask, "When that's baby coming?" or "How do you feel?"

Suggestions for making it through these last few (hopefully!) days?

  • I wonder if a chiropractic adjustment could help get baby off your nerve? Do you know for sure that it's baby's position and not your lower back/hips being misaligned? I had terrible SI joint pain at the end of my pregnancy and didn't address it with a chiro until after DD was born, when I couldn't walk without a limp. It might be worth looking into.

Anyway, hang in there! The end of pregnancy is hard, any way you slice it, but at least it doesn't last forever.

  • I've been going to the chiro twice a week and it's a life saver. I would definitely give that a try, you'll be able to have your NB, hang in there!

  • Your nerve pain is going to make NB easier because the sooner that kid is out, the sooner that nerve pain is history.  You will be motivated during the labour to get the job done.

Don't let all the dumb little comments get to you.  I remember asking a nurse why she was taking my blood pressure after babe was born and she said "we just want to make sure you're not about to have a stroke".  Seriously.  People say dumb stuff.

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • Take it one hour at a time. Seriously. I delivered on 40 weeks 4 days, and I know that every day after 40 weeks just feels sooooo long. You're so uncomfortable and ready. So when you feel like you can't do it anymore, think to yourself "I can do it for one more hour."

And remember, biology makes it happen this way. By the time it's actually time to give birth, you are willing to do whatever it takes to get that baby out. And that's exactly what you have to do - whatever it takes.

You can do this. You are stronger than you ever thought you could be, and you are learning about your strength with each passing hour.

  • Thanks, ladies!  Your comments help and I'm feeling a little better now.

I know I can make it this last little bit- just a little bit at a time!

I might look into the chiro if this last on through Monday- that's a good suggestion.

  • Stay strong!!!

I know how you're feeling and I felt that way my last week. The day that I just broke down and said "I can't deal with other people!" was just a couple days before labor started. It's going to happen for you, the nerve pain will be a distant memory once labor kicks off and everything is going to go exactly the way it's meant to be.

  • As an added bonus, my chiro can do adjustments later in pregnancy that can encourage labor.  Perhaps you can find one near you who could maybe do the same thing?  If you're desperate, you might look around tomorrow too, my chiro and a number of others in my area are open on Saturdays.
