This is funny as I often get called by the nickname Ani by DH's family. It really stems from him having a young nephew, and parents that are not native English speakers, so they struggle with my name. Anyway, my actual name is Andrea, which is really hard for kids to say. Not sure Ani would be a normally intended nickname for my name, but that is what they call me
Haha, whoa, did anyone else look at the OP's avatar and think "This is strange name for mj.reilly to be asking about..."?
Ahem... sorry.
I think Ani is a nickname that could come from any name that could also be shortened to Annie... They're not very different. Anya, Rhiannon maybe? I don't like it as a standalone.

I was thinking Andria. Also Andrea might be a stretch but it is a pretty name.
I actually have a friend named Ani and that is her real name. I forget what country her family is from, but I figured that it was a real name from there. She also pronounces it "On-ee."
I think you should consider Anais. If you like the Ani deFranco reference, you'll like the Anais Nin reference. Other than that, it's also a beautiful name.
Re: Ani nick name for ?
Annika
Anastasia
I don't think it makes a good stand alone name. Seems too much like a cute nickname.
I have friends Aniuska and Anisabel that go by Ani
Also Anna/Ana, Annabel/le, Analise
I don't think it can stand alone
Anabelle
Anika
Anastasia
I kind of like Ani as a standalone name, but I'm probably in the minority on that.
