What will the hospital allow?

How do I find out what the policies and procedures are at my hospital that will effect my labor and delivery? For example how do I know if they will let me have music, or if they will allow me to use the shower for labor, or if I have to stay in my bed the whole time. I'm a ftm so I have no clue what to expect. Help.

  • Either your Dr or MW should be able to tell or if you are taking a tour they usually have a Q&A session at some point

  • I wanted to call, but I was afraid that I would be bothering them, or taking their time away from actual patients. I think I will wait until my tour of the hospital. That should be a good time to ask my questions.

Call L&D and ask? I disagree with this. The nurses are busy- not to mention you're likely to get a variety of answers based on the nurse you talk to, and so much depends on the OB/MW.

Take a tour, where your guide is likely to be ready for questions like this, or ask your OB/MW.

  • Call the hospitals switch board and ask to talk to someone about their labor and delivery policies. They most likely will send you to the person who will guild tours but you don't have to wait to find out. Also be aware that what your ob/mw policies are is just as important and you should ask them too.

  • Agreed, take the tour. I went to the tour for two hospitals, one was very informative and the other, the tour guide knew nothing. I then took the childbirth class through the second hospital which answered all my questions.

  • I learned about all that stuff on the tour, but you could see if your hospital has an info line you could call. Ours has the healthline and you can use it to ask questions about anything, talk to a nurse, or register for classes they have there. I bet if you go to your hospital's website they might have a number like that.
