Do I need an "infant" car seat?

On the hospital list it says to bring an infant car seat. I have a convertible one but it's not one you can take out of the car easily or carry around...is this still okay, are they just making sure you have a car seat or do I have to go out and buy an actual infant one? (I'll ask my hospital on Tuesday when I go in for a tour but I was just curious what everyone else has)

  • I would think that as long as your convertible seat has the newborn insert, you should be fine. Just check the instructions and make sure it's suitable for a newborn and that it's rear facing.

  • The convertible one will be fine. The discharge nurse just needs to see that you have one so they will walk out with you. Just make sure its rear facing.

  • I'm fairly certain they cannot tell you it has to be an infant carseat. The hospital I'm going to does require you to bring the carseat into the hospital before they discharge, but there's not much they could do if I were to decide just to use a convertible from go.

As for convenience, well, I imagine infant carrier carseats add a lot.

  • We have a convertible car seat that's been installed and inspected, so it's staying in the car. I have no idea whether the hospital will ask us to bring it up to the room, but if they want to see it, they can come down to the parking lot.
  • Yes, our hospital required us to bring it as well and the baby was taken out in it accompanied by a nurse.
  • A nurse walked to the car with us, but we didn't have to take the car seat out of the car. If it's a convertible car seat that's made to hold newborns (ours is for 4-65 lbs), it should be fine.
