Arching back while rocking to sleep

After showing signs of being tired , I usually rock him to sleep for his nap. Lately he's been arching his back and pressing his feet against the arm rest then fussing. The only way I can get him to nap is to walk around and bounce him, any ideas?

Re: Arching back while rocking to sleep

  • No ideas, but I'd love to hear some. My son has been doing his for awhile now to keep himself awake. I can't sit down with him when he's tired because he'll use his legs to push himself off everything and to push himself up. I feel your pain!

  • Exactly what he does! It's like he knows once I sit, my legs are exhausted!

  • G started soon this, so I laid hI'm down and he fell right I sleep. He just wanted to be able to stretch out.
  • I'd lay him down in his crib when he starts this. He might just want to get comfortable on a flat surface and go to sleep. It also sounds like he might be trying to roll over. ( he might roll over on his tummy and go right to sleep).

  • If it's only arching while sleeping it might be just the stretching thing. However it could also be a sign of reflux, arching while going down in flat positions is because they are trying to keep the reflux from coming up.

  • ds had started doing this and the only way i can get him to calm his body down and not try to look around is by laying him across me sideways but hes on his tummy and im cradling him that way! it calms him down pretty quickly and hes able to rest and fall asleep pretty quick!i hope this helps you!

  • DS loves to do this too. What I have found that helps is sitting in the glider, hold him upright against my chest but facing out. (like in a baby carrier) I don't sit him on my lap, he doesn't like that for some reason. But the curve of my body forces his back to be arched just a little bit. Then I rock and he normally falls asleep.
