Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Getting my child to wear shoes

My daughter is 10 1/2 months old.  She is getting very close to walking.  Every time I have put a pair of shoes on her she cries.  I have tried to have her touch the shoes, play with them, but she doesn't even want them in the same room with her.  I have bought about 5 different pairs, and she does the same with all of them.  I have tried the super soft ones, and I put them on when I put her socks on, and she still knows and still cries.  How do you get your child to start wearing shoes?

  • My LO is not close to shoes yet, and this may be a stupid idea, but how about putting them on her when she is asleep so when she wakes up they will be on? lol, I haven't even thought about LO being afraid of them. Are they a big enough size? Maybe they are too tight and hurt her feet?

  • I did two things - first I bought brightly colored shoes with ribbon or flower (some sort of attached decoration) then I initally put them on her play mat so she thought they were a toy. She's never given me a hard time wearing them unless she just doesn't want me to put them on her because she's rather chew on them. She still stares and tries to play with them while they are on her feet. I do make sure they are plenty big and not velcroed too tightly.

DS is the same way, just keep putting them on for short periods of time and she will start to get used to them (even if she cries for a little, try to distract her).  DS still isn't used to the hard sole ones we bought from stride rite but is getting used to Robeez.

  • She doesn't need shoes.  The longer you can keep her barefoot the better off.  Shoes hinder proper foot development as well as walking.  If you need, just put socks on and don't force the shoes.  Once she's old enough to be walking around outside, you can start introducing a really soft-soled shoe just so she won't poke her foot on something on the ground.  If she's at home or in the stroller, just keep her in socks or barefoot.

  • Also, have you tried the super soft leather "shoes." They are basically like leather socks only shaped like shoes... that might help her get used to them also. DD wears those a ton these days because she plays outside at daycare and tries to eat her socks. Target sells a brand called Bright Stay or something like that. Zullily sells them every few days, I know one brand is Momo or something along those lines. They are a big hit in our house.

  • Thanks for your help.  Yes I have bought shoes that are big on her, and I have the soft leather ones.  I think I will try and put them on during her nap time in hope that she doesn't notice.   I appreciate all the ideas.

This is what we do too.  The few times I've put shoes on him because we were going to the playground or something, he's just glared at me and yanked them off anyway.

Haha! This is us too.  I bought the cutest pair of size 4 Koala kids sandals for LO and he pulls them off faster than I can put them on.  They were just for the cute factor anyway so no sweat.   He's always barefoot in the house and socks when we're out.
