Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Is anyone's 10 month old only taking one nap a day?

We have been so off schedule lately...I'm not sure what to do! For months and months my baby has been taking 2 naps a day (usually from 10am-11am, and then 3-5pm). Now for the past 2 weeks we are in sleeping hell...or lack of sleeping hell I should say. When she decides to take her second nap of the day, she then does not go to bed until 9:30 or 10pm. Then she wakes up 3-4 times during the night (which she never did before), then she usually wakes up for the day around 8:30ish for the day. Because she wakes up at 8:30am it throws off her whole nap schedule. She won't take her 1st nap until around 12:00 or 12:30...then she isn't tired for her second nap until 5:00ish. If I let her nap at 5:00 she is up again at 6:00pm and then we are completely and totally screwed up for the whole evening!!!

I am a first time Mom...so this is totally stressing me out! I don't know what happened to her awesome sleep schedule, but it has been crazy around here. Is anyone else experiencing this? Should I just give her one 2-3 hour nap in the middle of the day and skip the second nap????

Re: Is anyone's 10 month old only taking one nap a day?

  • Both of my kids are on the same sleeping/nap schedule.

    7:00 am- wake up
    10:00am- down for nap
    11:30am- up from nap
    6pm- down for the night

She might be ready for just one nap. My oldest stopped napping at 5months and didn't start again until about 2 months ago.

I would stick with the moved up nap at 12ish and then forgo a 2nd nap. If she gets overtired right before bed move her bedtime up a little bit (even 15 minutes can make a HUGE difference).

  • Thank you for the advice...I think you are right. My gut is telling me that she is ready for one nap...and an early bed time. It is nice to know that other babies are doing the same.
  • A couple days of waking DD up in the morning at her "normal" wake up time fixed this same issue for us.

  • That is true too...I never thought about doing that. I could try that
  • My ped said they typically go to 1 nap around 18m.  My LO has been a little off lately too.  Maybe its a growth spurt or something.

  • I've been in the SAME boat!

I heard from a few mom friends that this is common around 9-10 months, and when I researched it they were right! One book said this disruption in sleep is not an actual change in sleeping patterns but more of a, I-wanna-see-the-world-and-be-a-part-of-everything, thing and they don't want to spend time sleeping. I read it could last a month or two, and to try hard not to form new bad sleeping habits.

My daughter was putting herself to sleep like a champ, like clockwork, twice a day for 5 months. Then one day she woke up and decided to scream if we even go near her crib, and only sleep in her carseat. It is getting a little better, but I have busted out the swing again and she usually cat naps in there and then I nurse her to sleep in the afternoon.

    We will get through this!

  • 10 months is kind of early to move to one nap in my opinion. DS1 moved to one nap around 14 or 15 months and he had off days like this between 10 and 12 months where he didn't want to take his second nap. My guess is teething or growth spurt. I'd continue to try for two naps for a few weeks and wake her up at the "normal" wake up time like someone else suggested and see if she doesn't get back on track. If not, then I guess she's moving to one nap. Stick out tongue

  • Well it's 1:45 in the morning, and DD has decided again that it's time to get up for the day :/ I really hope this has to do with teething/crawling. Or some kind of growth spurt. I am at a total loss. But it is comforting to know other Mom's are going through this!
  • According to our Pedi, lots of kids drop their morning naps around 1 year old.  My LO has been napping horribly at DC lately.  He used to nap up to 5 hours a day, but now I'm lucky if he gets two 30 minute naps.

On weekends he tends to nap a lot better.  He still naps twice a day, but sometimes only once.

As for the waking dfuring the night...my LO does wake a little bit most nights.  He usually puts himself back to sleep.  Sometimes we have to go in and give him his pacifier (I think ti's all teething related for my LO).

  • Thank you all for your suggestions and advice! It is making me feel so much better! I am going to try for 2 naps a day for awhile and see how it goes. Today she did take 2 naps...so I guess it is going to be different day-to-day until she passes through whatever growth spurt this is. Hopefully waking in the night gets better too. I really think that it is also like one of you said...she wakes up and just wants to see the world. She is right on the cusp of crawling and I think that she is just ready to move around.
  • DS dropped to 1 nap at about 8.5 months. Instead of a short morning and afternoon nap, he is taking 1 long nap about 12/1ish. It had been awesome, and he no longer fights naps. Now...we ARE dealing with some serious sleep regression for the last month, but since it has been nearly 3 months I think it is unrelated and teething/growth/developmental milestones.

  • DD#3 takes one 2hr+ nap in the middle of the day, usually between 11:30-1pm (after lunch) and goes to bed at 7pm.  Other than that, she naps in the car seat while we're running around, but no scheduled nap.  She usually wakes up around 6:30-7am.

  • Thanks guys! It is good to know some babies have dropped that second nap. Ugh...it's hard being a 1st time Mom and feeling like I don't know anything!!! lol!!!
  • My LO kinda goes between one or two naps and I think its more because we're usually out and about in the mornings because my older daughter still takes a pretty decent afternoon nap.  Some mornings LO will take a 20-30 minute nap and sometimes an hour or 90 minutes.  Then in the afternoon she usually goes down around 1:30 until 3:00 - sometimes 4:00.  She sleeps okay at night, may wake once or twice.  We were really off because we were away two weekends in a row.  So we've been trying to roll with the punches.  One bit of advice that I remember hearing even from DD#1 is not to let your LO's nap past 4:00 in the afternoon or else you could have a difficult time getting them to sleep at night.  Perhaps that's something you'd want to consider.
