Doppler bpm question

I haven't had any hb readings at my doctor's office, yet.  I got my doppler on Saturday and have been acting like a crazy woman with it.

I've really only had (Saturday) 1 GREAT few seconds where the heartbeat was SUPER LOUD and the screen read: 160-165ish and then it was back to audible, but much fainter and the screen read: 135.

I have been doing it for a few days now and I am sure it's baby's heartbeat (I find my own first then go from there), but everytime I get the same 135 reading that comes and goes while I listen to a faint heartbeat.  Maybe I should try to count it on my own?

Could it just be that the reading is off because the heartbeat is so faint and the 160-165 was correct because it was very strong?  I go to the doctor's on Friday, but I'm afraid she'll get the same shiitty reading at 135 because her machine is approximately 416 years old.

****I have a Sonoline B

last time we couldn't get a reading on the doppler at her office, so she sent me for an ultrasound to see the heart flicker.  Hoping for that this time, too!  Except I would like for them to give me some kind of reading while they do the ultrasound!  :)

  • The 135 is your HR.  You are listening to your femoral artery.

No, I'm positive it's not my own.  When I do move towards my femoral arterty the sound changes and the number drops to my normal rate.  I wear a heart monitor that monitor's my heart rate at all times because of heart issues, so I am always aware of my rate and I have checked it with what I am hearing on my doppler when I am near my artery and they match up.

  • Another thing.. 2 coworkers at my job one just had twins the other has a little girl.. she said the dopplers never worked for her.. Its very nice that the dr told you to have a sonogram to reassured you.. Ive seen videos on youtube and woman complain alot about those dopplers bcuz its hard to get readings anytime before your 20s.. :0/ but i wouldnt worry.. what brand did u you? i was tempted to buy one but i think i would obsess

Maybe I will just have to calculate the bpm on my own.  I am sure that I am hearing baby's heartbeat which is amazing-  I still consider it to be a great purchase!  I have the sonoline b

  • My doppler always says 135 too. Out of the 4-5 times I've used it I've only gotten a 150-160's number once, and it was only for a few seconds. Although I can hear the baby's heartbeat for more than a few seconds, I don't think the doppler can accurately pick up the heart rate when the baby is this small and all the other sounds are coming in at the same time. My doctor used her doppler and it did not even have a screen to give a heart rate. She counted herself and told me it was in the 160's. Each time I've used mine at home it sounds just the same as it did in the doctor's office. I wouldn't worry about it or put too much stock into the number your doppler displays.
  • My doppler almost always reads around 140 even though baby heart rate is typically in the 160s. You could try counting but if it's not very strong it could be hard to get an accurate one.

I've had two losses so I really do understand the anxiety but I try to focus more on the fact that I find a heartbeat than what the readout is - I think that's a healthier way to approach it at this stage.

Thank you!  I've heard about the readings being wrong on these, but I'm glad someone else is also getting 135's.  So, maybe we will get to hear this Friday and she can do an accurate reading.  I will try to calculate it by what I hear since I'm so interested and I'll ignore the screen because I'm sure the numbers are incorrect.

I agree completely!  I just want to know the number for curiosity's sake.  I am so excited that I can easily find the baby's heartbeat everytime I use my machine and I'm sure everything is going well...  thank you

  • I never feel that the screen gives an accurate reading with my Sonoline B. I usually see 130s, too. I use the stopwatch feature on my phone and count the beats for 10 sec. then divide by 6. I'll get a reading in the 150s usually, which matches what the hr was at my NT scan yesterday - 153. I wouldn't count on the reading the machine gives you. Just be glad you hear the heartbeat!

  • I am just like you. Consistent 130ish. A couple of seconds at 160. Still not convinced it's the baby's hb. Boo.

  • I just got back from hearing the hb on the doppler at the dr's office. It did vary, but not by much... around 159 at the highest and then it bounced btwn 156/157 for a few minutes before the fetus moved away. Not much variation at all and we listened to it for about 5 mins or so.
