XP: Starting solids - what time of the day?

My DD is almost 5 months old and we are planning on starting solids in few weeks. All the books and websites suggests that we feed the baby early during the day so that if the baby has any reactions we can take the baby to the doctor later that day.

So, I'd like to know what time do you feed solid to your baby? I usually nurse her around 7am before we leave and take her to daycare. We don't get home until little after 6. I guess I could feed her in the morning before I nurse, but she'll be barely awake then. I'm thinking that we'll introduce any new food on weekend so that we can keep an eye on her, but then again, the regular pedi will be closed on the weekend.

I just love to hear what other working mom is doing/did when they first introduced solid food to your baby. Any advice will be very helpful!

TIA!

  • I opted for lunchtime (around 11) to intro solids and let daycare do it.  She did fine with that and gave enough time to figure out if there was a reaction that needed medical attention.

  • We introduce new solids in the morning on the weekend so we can keep an eye on DS.  Daycare will not introduce new foods, we have to give a new food to DS 3 times at home before we can send a it in to daycare.
  • We introduced solids at night, thinking it would be nice to have a full tummy before bedtime.  We would give him cereal around 7pm.  he got his last bottle before bed aroun 9pm.

Daycare wanted us to do it at home before they did it at school.  We waited a few weeks and added cereal at lunch and just have progressively added more "meals" and weaned away from the cereal into baby food.

  • This is what we did - I would nurse Billy as soon as he woke up and then I would give him cereal about 15/20  minutes later.  I wanted to be the one to give it to him.  we introduced most new food over the weekend or at night.  I would nurse before offering the solids - the bm is better for them and you also don't want to introduce solids when they are starving - they won't be patient.

  • I introduced new foods in the morning on the weekends so I could watch for any reaction. Then I would send the newly introduced food to daycare on Monday and for the rest of the week until she got use to it. Then start a new solid the next weekend.?
