Special Needs

Has anyone had to re-write an IEP?

DS has an IEP for his special needs preschool where he receives speech. He is already out of school for the summer.

DS was evaluated for OT on Friday and will receive services once a week. I asked for preferences through his old EI therapist as to where to go and she recommended herself and the service from her office. They also take DS's health insurance..

It has been 2 weeks since DS has received behavioral therapy. The pediatrician referred me to this one that takes DS's insurance, too

What would I need to get from them so they can re-write the IEP? I want to get ready for August while I still have time.

TIA girls!

  • Did you have your ds evaluated privately or through the school system? If it was done privately, are you wanting to change the IEP for the school to provide the services in the fall? They would probably have to do their own eval for that. You always can call a meeting for the IEP at anytime but they probably wouldn't be available to have everyone meet until August now that school is out. I know we had a meeting with our IEP team the last week of school to get any changes made for the Fall.

  • Gosh, that is a long time just to get DS therapy from his school in January.

  • We did have to re-write DD1's IEP. It happened very quickly in the last week of preschool, so that things were set for fall. Her teachers and therapists felt she'd made additional progress since her IEP meeting, and that the most appropriate peer models for her were going to be in a different, mainstream class.

We had planned to start her off in the same class she was, where there are additional SpEd supports. But after visiting the other class and giving her a trial day, DH and I agreed that the other class was the best place for her. I felt even better about it when I found out that only one of the three teachers is returning, and the lead teacher (who is excellent), is going to work for ChildFind.

It all happened really fast. I spoke with both DD1's SLP and lead teacher before considering the change that they were proposing; we visited the class a couple of days later. I waived the 10-day notification period; the lead teacher emailed me the amended IEP after DD1 and I had visited the new class. DH and I had one weekend to talk it over, one evening to review the amended IEP, and I signed off on it the next day.

However, it was just minutes of service and classroom placement that were changing. Her goals, which took up the bulk of our time & effort in the original IEP, remained the same.

  • Based on your response, it sounds like you had a private evaluation done and not one through the school system.  Realistically, Auntie's timeline is what you should prepare yourself for.  I'll be honest...the beginning of the year is typically VERY busy in the SpEd department (coordinating schedules/therapies of current students, working in transfer students, etc.).  Even in a best case scenerio, I would venture to say it will take at least 2 months before services begin.

My child was evaluated mid-February and her IEP was in late April.  We opted to delay services until August (there were only 4 weeks left in the year and our EI therapists just continued on after her b'day through insurance).

Can I ask why a full evaluation was not initially done?  I know all systems do things differently, but in my school system, ALL preschool children who come for evals are globally assessed (OT, PT, SLP, developmental diagnostitian, and even nursing).

  • I doubt we would have to re-write the whole thing. I just wanted to add things like his new therapies so they can better understand DS.

  • It's not a matter of rewriting...you are requesting NEW services.  An evaluation has to be done to determine if your child is eligible for OT.  Just because a private evaluation resulted in services does not mean he will qualify in the school setting.
  • If you just want the school or teacher to know what services he is receiving privately, I would see where he's at before school starts and what goals the therapists are working on with him. Even if they're not school related it could help the teacher in the classroom. You don't need an IEP for that.

IF, however, any of those goals are educational related-for example without the therapies he would have trouble functioning in a classroom setting-then you could call a meeting to find out what services the school would be willing to offer because your child is struggling with that particular goal (and it's education related-this is the most important to understand). Then they can assess him and IF he qualifies for services through the school, meet for an IEP meeting to write up those goals as related to the school.

  • It took us an entire school year to get an IEP. We then partially rejected due to poorly written goals and objectives and lack of accommodations. It only took 2 weeks to have a meeting and re-write the goals and objectives. I am currently waiting for the revised IEP.

The time line will be determined by why you are asking for the re-write. If an outside eval is involved it could take much longer. If you just want to re-write the parent concern section, that is pretty easy.
