Does anyone have any good articles/info on giving spices to babies.
Due to allergy concerns, and some situational ones (we're foster parents) our Dr strongly recommended only introducing one new food every three days. We are following this. We are doing some purees, and some pieces of food.
I like the idea of my baby eating what I eat, and getting used to lots of spices and flavors.
Does anyone have any experience or articles about spices for babies with lots of allergies?
Thanks!
Re: Spices/ Allergies
What kind of allergies are we talking here? Environmental? Food? Both?
My son has environmental and food allergies, but does quite well with seasonings/spices, as long as we check all of the ingredients first, so that we know what all is in it and can avoid any known allergens.
I don't have any scientific articles because they're really aren't that many, but spices are rarely an issue - we're allergic/intolerant to food proteins. At the height of his FAs, Ari had 21 FAs (+ several environmental ones) & never had an issue with spices. His favorite meal is chickpea curry, which is heavily spiced.
Seasoning packets & such could be an issue if they contain gluten, corn, soy, etc. I would watch those.
My son had lots of allergies as an infant (and still has quite a few), but did well with spices. I would introduce a food by itself first, like sweet potato, and then the next week I'd give him sweet potato with cinnamon in it, and then the next week ginger. Stuff like that. The good thing is once you challenge a combination, like cinnamon and sweet potato, then it is fine to put cinnamon in anything else, like pear sauce or even on mashed rice.
It seems like such a tedious process at first, but it goes faster than it seems like it will.
