Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Is it normal?

My DD was a preemie and I have always been worried about her developmentally progressing because I have known other preemies to have some delays.  However, I think she seems to be incredibly smart.  I don't really know what's normal for an 11 month old, but I was hoping you guys could tell me if it's normal for her to be doing these things:

1.  She can say:  Mama, Dada, Drink, Roof Roof (for the dog), Hi, Bye

2.  She can point out my nose, eyes and mouth when asked to.

3.  She is walking, but not able to get into a standing position unless she holds something.

4.  If you ask her to point out someone specific in a picture she does it with complete accuracy.

Maybe these things are all normal, I've never had an 11 month old, but to me it seems pretty cool that she is picking up on stuff so quickly, or at least to me it seems quickly.   Is all this just normal 11 month behavior?

Re: Is it normal?

  • DD1 could do all of those things at 11 months except walk independently. She didn't take her first unassisted steps until shortly after her first birthday. I guess I can't really say what the average or standard is for 11 months, but to me it seems fairly normal. Kids are little sponges and pick up on everything and come so far developmentally in the first several years. It's really a lot of fun to watch them learn so many new things :)

  • Are these things entirely normal to do at that age? Yes.

Is it common/can most babies do them? Probably not.

Basically, it's great that your kid can do those things, and a lot of other babies can at least do some on that list. Then there's other babies that can't do a one of them and it's perfectly normal.

This is a big developmental stage and "normal" is all over the spectrum at this point.

  • My DD does this at 11 months and she was also pre-term.  That just shows that she is developmentally right on track.

But like the other poster said, normal is all over the place.  my DS will not be doing the things DD does (they're twins), and then one day, he starts doing it like he was an expert.  I know that when I was a baby I was behind on many things,...heck i didn't even start walking til 15 months+ and now I'm doing my phD in molecular biology.

Ohh...and mine have picked up things that they saw on T.V.  Once the t.v. was on and we were watching the movie "war horse" , when the scene where all of the army guys are trying to call the horse to come over.  (in the scene they were whistling and clicking their tongues to get the horse to come to them).  About 20 seconds later DD was clicking her tongue with perfect accuracy...the DS started the same.....and ever since then they do it everyday.  They click their tongues at eachother and it's hilarious.

My son is 11 1/2 months, can do only half of those things but I still think he is developmentally "normal"

  • My DS is almost 11 months old, he has been walking for 2 months, he can get up and down the coffee table or coach by himself, he has been holding his own bottle since 4 months and now almost holds his little fork...but he doesnt point out the nose, eye etc....so it all depends..

I try not to compare him to other babies, because every baby is unique and will do things on their own time. I dont think you got anything to worry about..
