Blended Families

Child Support Modification Update ... sorta ...

As some of you may remember we just moved to a new area and DHs income has decreased and he is allowed an adjustment on his child support. BM most definitely would not be on board for this adjustment, even though we haven't officially told her DH wants to pursue it, I have been thinking of other ways to go about this. One of you fellow bumpies, sorry I dont remember who it was, asked how we go about calculating CS since we are in once place and BM in another.

Today I called Guam's CS department and they said that as the NCP DH could go into the local office here in VA and open a CS case for an adjustment. I am looking on VAs website and it says they no longer offer a free calculator online. Do any of you lovely ladies have this calculator? If so, are you willing to share?

Their current agreement was agreed upon through working with lawyers so technically I was told this would be a new CS case. This may be a silly question, but we've never gone this route. Is using the CS department a free of fee service ?

Just an FYI about the online CS calculators: I don't know if this runs true to every state, but at least in MT the CS calculation is much more complicated than what the online CS calculator guesstimated. In our case, it was more than $500 greater than the actual calculation came out to. You might want to get the calculation paperwork and plug in the numbers yourself (yes it involves a bit of math and you need BM's info from current CS) but it will give you a much better picture of whether filing for an adjustment is worth it or not.

Also, if you call CSED they can usually set you up with a case adviser who can run the numbers for you within a week or so and let you know if it would benefit you to recalculate. CS is calculated based on where the CP is living, not all states take COL differences into account.

Words from my experience having *nearly recalculated the past two summers in a row, then deciding against.
