Check out nameberry.com. They have a lot of blogs and lists that talk about names you don't hear too often.
Also, nymbler.com lets you type in a few of your favorite names and gives you suggestions based on those. Good luck!
Yup, I love both of these sites. I found baby name books too overwhelming and full of names I wouldn't consider in a million years. It was easier to search sites based on names I already liked.
A lot of my favorite names come from books and movies and even a few from comic books. Heritage is also really important to me, which is why I've decided to give my future children my maiden name as a second mn (I don't have any children now but...).
A lot of people also draw inspiration from family names, but a lot of the people in my family kind of suck, honestly, and there's only, like, one or two people I'd actually name children ever. One of whom is my dead grandfather.
Other than that, though, it's pretty much like I said -- everywhere.
Re: Girl Names
I honestly was inspired by hanging around sites like Nameberry, this Baby name board and the blog You Can't Call it 'It'.
Just always liked the name since growing up - I had an acquaintance with the name. [Jocelyn]
I would also be inspired by family names. [using maiden name where possible, or monthes/grandmothers name]
I also like girl names that can be shortened to nicknames that sound like boys. [i.e. Charlotte - Charlie, Josephina - Joey, Frances - Frankie]
