MSPI and traveling?

We are going on vacation the end of the month, and I'm worried about what to eat. I'm told to avoid dairy and soy, so what should I do when I have to go out and eat?

I havent' have dairy in a month, and soy in 10 days.  My daughter has been much less gassy since I stopped eating dairy, but nothing else has changed.  Some days her skin looks better or her stool looks better, but other days, like today, her stool was very mucousy, and she cried and cried for 45 minutes before pushing it out...

TIA!

  • I bring all of my own food. Soy and dairy are in just about every fast food and packaged food so it's better to bring my own food instead of eating nothing

  • We're going on vacation in a few months and I'm already stressing out about this too. If you know where you'll be eating ahead of time, you can see if they have allergen info on their website. Or you can call between peak times and ask if there are dairy and soy free menu items. Fast food is way harder than sit down restaurants. I've heard Chipotle and Panera are good places for accomodating allergies though. Chick fil a fries are dairy and soy free. If you go to an Italian sit down restaurant, a lot of pastas and marinara sauces are okay (be sure to ask though). You can also see if you can order a plain chicken breast and veggies or something like that. Like pp said, bringing your own food is safest, when in doubt. If you're staying somewhere with a fridge, I'd definitely have safe food on hand. Good luck! ETA: As far as LO's diapers go, give it some more time. It took 4-5 wks for DD2's poop to go back to normal. It can take 2 wks for all the dairy to clear your system and another 2 to clear LO's. Hang in there!

  • Thank you for your replies.

I heard even a tiny amount is not okay.  Is that true?  Like at a restaurant, if someone uses a utensil that handled cheese on my plate, that's contaminated???

Yes, technically it would be contaminated, but it depends on how sensitive your LO is whether they'd be bothered by it. It is hard to avoid cross contamination in restaurants.

  • Also, make sure you read labels on *everything* you put in your mouth. Most vitamins have dairy and/or soy in them, anything with caramel coloring can contain soy too. Enfamil's vit D drops have caramel coloring in them so we switched to Carlson D drops. Coke has caramel coloring and so do some flavors of Gatorade. Soy hides in sooo many things under lots of different names.

That really depends on your DC.  It's not an allergy and additional exposure is not going to make the next reaction worse, like it could with peanuts or things like that. But, it could make for a really unpleasant vacation.

I've never had a problem with cross contamination with plates and silverware.  More like items being cooked on the same surface as something that contained dairy (e.g. my eggs made with oil, but cooked on a griddle that just had butter on it).
