Appropriate number of things on baby registry?

Hi there...I guess this is kind of an introduction as well.  I've been lurking for a while. I'm due the 14th of October with my first baby.  Hello all :)

My question is: can I have TOO many things on my registry?  I'm registering at babies r us and amazon and have been slowly collecting things as a way to keep myself organized.    I want to give people options and because this is our first baby we do actually need a lot of stuff, mostly the small stuff.   I have about 80 items on each.  That's includes individual bottles, Individual cloth diapers, and lotions and stuff

Anyway, I don't want to come off greedy, or really ask for more then I really need. Thanks ahead of time.

Re: Appropriate number of things on baby registry?

  • Welcome!

I don't think you will be viewed as greedy and that you can't have too many items.  I plan on putting everything I want on my registries as well, knowing that whatever others don't buy for me I can buy at the end with the 10% completion discounts.  I use my registry primarily for me - whenever I read about a product I think I'll need, I add it so that I'll remember to get it later on.

When I shop off of someone else's registry, I always prefer if there are a lot of options on it.  Makes it easier to shop.

  • My mom, who is big on etiquette, told me to put whatever on the registry.  People will buy what they want either on or off registry.  But this way you also have a list of what you want/need.

This is great. I gues I just wanted to know what the etiquette is.  :). I'm a huge list maker so I'm keeping mostly for my sanity anyway.

  • I have 127 things on my Amazon registry both practical things and things I just have to have. That's what a registry is for - to put stuff you want on there and more than likely if someone has already had a kid they will look at your registry and say "ohh, I had that and it was awesome" and buy that for you. My mom actually told me the mattress I had on there (which is $150 foam mattress) was too expensive and to get another one. I told her to just buy something else on the registry and stop being a hag. If someone doesn't want to spend $150 on a mattress for me, then they can get me a $20 baby book set! I still want both!!

Besides....these things are to make your life easier...it's not like you're being greedy youre being practical.

  • Hii!  No, I think you can have as much stuff on it as you want.  Honestly, when I am buying for someone off of their registry, I hate when they don't have enough stuff.  I want to be able to pick and choose what I get them.  I don't necessarily look at how much is on their registry, I just get irritated when there's nothing lol.  Plus, like PP's said....you get a percentage off at the end!

We even made a secret 2nd registry we're not telling anyone about so we can get the coupon ;]

  • I'm happy someone asked this!  We started our registry today at Babies R Us and the woman told us that each guest at a shower averages 5 gifts... So if you are having a shower(s) with 40 people then you need to register for 200 items. I was kinda shocked by this number... not sure if it's just something they tell you to try to sell more items?

I haven't gone in to register officially, just online so I'm not sure what the people in the store say but like I said I have about 120 items, with some multiples/repeats and i don't feel like I was going overboard. Things add up so fast especially when you're starting from scratch!

Yes I think that's something they tell you to get you to add more. I don't know about anyone else but I've attended many showers and I've never bought 5 things off of the registry. Depending on the price point I've bought one mid-priced item and sometimes little things that weren't on the registry.

  • We had the same question as well! My SIL told me that we should put the bigger ticket items such as a crib, dresser or rocking chair as well as certain swings or cradle and sways. Then gender specific clothes that you like. She informed us that if you put all the little stuff on there such as bottles, sippy cups, washcloths and things like that people get overwhelmed with a 15 page registry. She says we will get the smaller items anyway.

We went to do the registry and then had her go through it with a fine tooth comb and between the little things she told us about and her ridiculous Consumer's Report obsession we have (what we think) is the most perfect registry. Once we find out the gender, which is tomorrow, we'll go add the clothes.

Hope this helps at least a little! It worked for us, definitely. :)

    I agree with this!

That's ridiculous.  People will spend the amount of money they want regardless of how many items that can buy.  Let's say someone is close to you and wants to give a bigger gift, they'll spend the extra money on that gift (say a stroller). Someone who has financial trouble or whatnot, will spend 10$ on buying you bath toys.

I think it's more important to put items that YOU need whether that's 10 items or 100 items.  The salesperson was pulling your leg on that one.  I've never bought more than 2 gifts off a registry because I had a budget to spend and those two gifts fit right under it.

This is EXACTLY what we were told at both BBB and BRU.  We have about 80 items on each, but are planning on adding more as we learn more about what we will need.
